A client of ours recently had a high-end washer fail in a cascading event. Multiple safeguards failed. Water poured out the front. The old drain pan was cracked. The entire second story laundry room flooded.

Another plumber recommended opening the floor, opening the ceiling below, and installing a floor drain. It was invasive and expensive - and it would not have actually solved the root problem.

We took a different approach.

We installed automatic shutoff valves with leak detection sensors. We tested it with a single drop of water. The alarm sounded instantly and both water supply valves shut off automatically.

Simple. Intelligent. Modern.

We install these in:
• Laundry rooms
• Bathrooms
• Kitchens
• At water heaters

We also hav a different sensor we install on whole-home main water lines to cut water to the entire property if a leak is detected.

If you want real protection against major water damage, this is one of the smartest upgrades you can make.

Big Freeze Alert for Central Texas - What Homeowners Should Do Now:

A strong cold front is expected to bring freezing temperatures to Central Texas this weekend, with lows dropping into the 20s and hard freeze conditions possible. This kind of weather can put a lot of stress on home plumbing systems that aren’t used to sustained cold.

Here are practical actions you can take today to protect your plumbing and avoid costly damage:

1. Insulate exposed pipes and outdoor faucets
Wrap them with foam insulation or covers. Pipes in crawl spaces, attics, garages, and along exterior walls are especially vulnerable.

2. Disconnect and drain garden hoses
Leaving hoses attached can trap water in lines and increase the risk of freezing.

3. Let faucets drip slightly overnight if temperatures drop below freezing
A slow trickle reduces internal pressure and helps prevent freezing and bursting. Slightly open both hot and cold handles for best effect.

4. Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls
This allows warm air to circulate around plumbing.

5. Locate your main shut‑off valve
If a pipe does burst, turning off the water quickly can significantly reduce damage.

Stay safe and warm this weekend, and check on neighbors who may have older plumbing systems.

Share this with someone who might need a reminder!

PS- we sent out a winterization checklist to our clients that includes protecting backflow devices like RPZs for pools. These are often overlooked but can be expensive to repair if they freeze. If you want a print‑friendly winter prep guide, let us know and we’ll be happy to share it.

Another gas leak caught - this one on the utility side.

While estimating a gas line install for a pool heater, we noticed a strong smell of gas near the meter. The homeowner said both the gas company and another plumbing company had recently checked, and both said there were no leaks.

That didn’t sit right with us.

We sprayed leak detection solution on the fittings and sure enough, bubbles everywhere. (See photo!)

We alerted the homeowner immediately and advised them to keep clear until the gas company arrived. As licensed plumbers, we can’t work upstream of the meter, so we called the gas company (unnamed, don't want to throw anyone under the bus) ourselves.

The gas company tech was skeptical at first (they use wand detectors, which don’t always work well outdoors), but when he saw the bubbles himself, he thanked us and repaired the leak.

If you smell gas, don’t ignore it. Call it in.
And if you need help with your gas plumbing systems -installations, safety inspections, or repairs - we’re here to help.

Last night while leaving the gym, our owner noticed a faint smell of gas coming from a nearby business in the same shopping center. The unit was closed, but it had multiple pizza ovens inside. Trusting his instincts and experience, he took action.

He ran home to grab his gas detector from work, returned, and confirmed a gas leak at the rear of the unit. He stopped into a nearby sandwich shop to ask if they had contact info for the tenant - we appreciate them taking him seriously right away. After calling 911 and Texas Gas, responders confirmed the leak: 2 PSI of gas actively leaking into a ~1,500 sq ft space with open businesses on either side (for reference, 2 PSI is a high-pressure level typically reserved for large multimillion-dollar homes and not small commercial kitchens.)

Huge thanks to the Austin Fire Department for responding so quickly and taking the situation seriously once it was confirmed. Their professionalism and fast action helped ensure everything was resolved safely.

This is exactly why Wildflower Plumbing & Gas takes code compliance and safety seriously - no shortcuts, no guesswork, no exceptions. There's a lot on the line with gas plumbing, and not all gas plumbers are created equal.

If you ever smell gas, trust your instincts - call it in. Even if you’re unsure, it could save lives.

❄️Cold Weather Alert!❄️

📣Protect Your RPZ Before the Hard Freeze!📣

Freezing temperatures are on the way! If you have a backflow preventer (RPZ), now is the time to prepare and avoid costly damage.

✅ For RPZs with a Freeze Relief Valve:
✔️ Ensure the valve is working properly.
✔️ Wrap exposed pipes with foam insulation.
✔️ Install a weatherproof insulated RPZ cover.
✔️ Monitor for dripping—this means it’s working!

✅ For RPZs Without a Freeze Relief Valve:
✔️ Shut off & drain the system if not in use.
✔️ Open a downstream faucet to help release trapped water.
✔️ Slightly open all 4 test c***s to allow air in.
✔️ Wrap the RPZ and pipes with insulation and consider heat tape.

🚨 If your RPZ freezes, DO NOT use an open flame to thaw it! Use warm towels or a hairdryer instead.
