DANDELIONS

The dandelion is one of the most common w**ds found in yards in our area.

Known for its jagged leaves and colorful flowers, the dandelion grows a bright yellow, sphere-shaped flower in the spring and early summer.

Later into the summer, the flower turns into a white, cottony seed pod. When a gust of wind hits the dandelion, the seeds blow through the air and begin to grow elsewhere. This is why dandelions are so hard to control.

Did you know that this common w**d’s leaves are edible? Of course, I am referring to “organic” dandelions, which are plants that have never been sprayed with pesticide or poison.
America’s early settlers brought dandelions with them as a food source and it was used as a diuretic and as a “tonic” to purify the blood.

The leaves and flowers can be eaten raw and added to salads or boiled in water to make a tea, BUT BEFORE INGESTING CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR, TO MAKE SURE IT IS SAFE.

GARDENIAS are a popular evergreen shrub in our area that bears a FRANGRANT, lovely white flower. This heat loving shrub prefers full sun, with some shade in the hottest part of summer.

Gardenias should be planted in well-conditioned soil containing peat moss and compost. Cultivating around the plants may damage their shallow roots, so a good mulching material should be placed around the plant 2 to 3 inches deep, to keep the soil moist, cool and w**d free.

Feed Gardenia plants every three weeks during the growing season with a Rhododendron & Azalea type food, or acidifying fertilizer
