Did you know that two plants called “sneezew**d” can look—and behave—completely differently in the garden?

I grow both Helenium amarum and Helenium autumnale. The first is an annual that stays lower and can create a wonderful flowering border, while the second is a taller perennial that I like for adding height and structure among other plants.

Growing them side by side has been a great reminder that knowing a plant’s growth habit can be just as important as knowing its name when deciding where to use it in a garden.

Both are also wonderful plants to watch when the pollinators arrive. 🐝🌼

A different way to bring the season indoors.

I create dried botanical décor in Baton Rouge using locally grown and seasonal flowers, grasses, seed heads and other natural materials — including many Louisiana native plants.

Each piece is handcrafted and one of a kind, preserving the colors, textures and forms of the garden long after the growing season.

Two plants I love to grow together 🌿

Scarlet sage (Salvia coccinea) and Gaura have become a great combination in my garden. They bloom through much of the year here in Baton Rouge, slowing down when freezing weather arrives, and they ask for very little care.

I planted them along a small fence, and because they reseed readily, they’ve gradually filled in the space and created a fuller, more natural planting.

The bright red scarlet sage and airy Gaura also mix easily with many other plants—one of the things I love about using them in a garden.

A little collection of Louisiana Dried Botanicals 🌾
Flowers, grasses and seed heads take on a different kind of beauty once the growing season has passed. I love preserving their shapes, textures and natural colors and giving them another life indoors.

One of the more polite mountain mints in my garden. 🌿

Whiteleaf Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum albescens) has a clump-forming habit, making it a great native plant to consider when designing a garden.

I especially love plants that can have more than one life. Besides enjoying this one in the garden, I also harvest some of it to use in my dried botanical arrangements.

A beautiful Louisiana native — in the garden and sometimes inside my home, too.

One of the simplest ways I preserve plant material is by hanging it to dry. 🌿

It doesn't require complicated equipment, but when and how you harvest the plant — and giving it the right conditions to dry — can make a big difference in the final result.

This is one of the methods I use to preserve flowers, grasses and other botanicals that later become part of my dried arrangements.

I'll be sharing more little things I've learned from growing, harvesting and working with plants here in Louisiana.

Not all Rudbeckias look alike. 🌻

A little morning harvest from the garden — and a reminder of just how much variety can exist within one group of flowers.

From the deep wine tones of ‘Cherry Brandy,’ to tiny ‘Prairie Glow’ and brown-eyed Susans, to the golden petals of Gloriosa Daisy and ‘Irish Green Eyes’ — each one brings something completely different to a fresh arrangement.

This is one of the things I love about growing and working with seasonal flowers: you never need every bloom to look the same.

Not every arrangement needs bright flowers to make a statement. I love working with the quiet colors of the dried botanicals -soft greens, warm goldens, delicate seeds heads and natural textures that tell the story of the changing seasons. This arrangement is built primarily from Louisiana native plants, including switchgrass, river oats and wood sedge, peppergrass, plantain, and ironw**d with everlasting and celosía to add subtle highlights.
