When comparing patio quotes, make sure you're comparing apples to apples.
Two contractors may quote the same size patio using the same paver - but the construction underneath those pavers can be completely different.
For our open-graded patio installations, we typically:
• Remove approximately 8" of existing soil (more for new builds)
• Install commercial-grade geotextile fabric to stabilize the base, distribute the patio's load and prevent the aggregate from mixing with the soil beneath it
• Install 5" of 3/4" clean chat
• Install a 1" screed layer of 3/8" chip stone
• Compact the base and perform compaction testing
• Laser-grade the patio within fractions of an inch
• Establish the proper slope for long-term performance
• Use permeable jointing sand that allows water to drain through the patio (prevents settling during freeze/thaw cycles)
Proper excavation, base depth, compaction and grading are what help prevent settling, uneven pavers and premature failure. Once the patio is finished, most of this work can't be seen - but it's the most important part of the installation.
A professionally installed patio is an investment in your property, so take the time to make sure the contractor you hire is legitimate. Ask to see pictures of previous projects, have them explain their complete installation process, confirm that they're properly insured and read through their customer reviews.
Don't choose a contractor based solely on the lowest price. Make sure you understand what you're paying for and feel confident that your investment will be built correctly and last for years.
