After five years of serving full-time in the Ohio Air National Guard, Philip Francis had a dream of starting his own company and a strong aspiration to help others. In August of 2004, with the help of his wife, Rebekah, A Kut Above Lawn & Landscaping was born. In 2006, Philip and Rebekah welcomed their first addition, Philip Jr., to the family. In 2007, they were doubly blessed with twin girls, Mo

rgan and Miranda. All three of their children can, from time to time, be seen helping out and providing a little humor. Philip and Rebekah look forward to sharing their passion with the children as they continue growing the business and helping others. A Kut Above started in Beavercreek, Ohio. Today, with the support of friends, family and loyal customers, the company has grown into a successful business that services Dayton, Ohio and surrounding areas. Philip, Rebekah and the entire A Kut Above team are committed to quality work, great communication and attention to detail. They believe in a strong work ethic, building relationships with customers, and taking pride in maintaining the highest level of professionalism. Tip Tuesday:
For anyone that is wanting to seed this fall - now is the time. Get the seed in the ground as soon as possible. Mid-October is typically when you want to have seed in the ground so it has time to germinate and get somewhat established before the winter dormant period sets in. Some years it is safe seeding into late October but it all depends on the weather for November and December. As everyone knows, nobody really has any idea about what the weather is going to do.
So, don't wait if you want it to germinate!

Tip Tuesday:
Fall is not only the best time for planting grass, trees, and shrubs. It's also the best time to put holes in your lawn. That is "core aeration" to be politically correct. Core aeration is one of the single most beneficial things you can to do your lawn. It helps with soil compaction and allows more oxygen and water to get to the root of the lawn, which is what helps keep your lawn green and growing for your family to enjoy. You can also overseed after aerating. We will begin aerating after the first good rain fall in September. Give us a call and we will add you to our schedule.

Tip Tuesday:
Even though the temperatures are still up there, this is the time to get your seeding jobs done. Late summer and into early fall is the best time to get the seed in the ground. Soon the temps will be falling along with some rain (at least that is what usually happens). If you can get a good start on the germination process this fall and even cut the grass a few times before it goes dormant in winter, that will give your lawn a great jump start for when things start growing next spring. Fall is the best time for planting!

We are looking to add 2-3 positions for the fall starting immediately. We have several college students heading back to school that we need to replace. They need to enjoy working outside as part of a team and be able to pass a drug test. They can e-mail resumes to [email protected].

Tip Tuesday:
This has certainly been the wettest start of summer that I can remember. It has kept everything green and growing strong, which is great. The downside to all of this rain is that the crab grass pre-emergent that was applied in early spring may have had too much moisture and wash out to be as effective as normal. The effects will be shown in the coming months when things finally dry out and get hot and dry. This is when the crab grass will take over and be in full force. There is an application that can be applied to actively growing crab grass, but it is not a normal service performed unless it is specifically requested (due to the cost of the product). It's something to think about if you start to see more crab grass later this summer. At least we are not in a drought!

Tip Tuesday:
For those who cleaned up their beds in early spring, applied pre-emergent and mulched, you have probably noticed that the pre-emergent has lost its effectiveness against weeds now that it's July. Especially with the wettest June I can remember, it's a good time to clean out the existing weeds in your beds and re-apply pre-emergent. The next couple months will be a battle against the weeds, and the sooner you apply some Snapshot, the more time you will have to spend on the things you enjoy instead of pulling weeds.

Tip Tuesday:
It's Hardscape Season.
For those of you that don't know what "hardscaping" is, it is referring to paver patios, walkways, retaining walls, etc. Hardscape work can be performed in the spring and fall as well, but we prefer installing pavers during the summer months. The reason is that hardscape work typically requires the excavation of a good amount of dirt and debris. It's easier and more efficient to do this when it's hot and dry outside. If you have an area around your home that you would like to convert to usable space that your family can spend time together for years to come, give us a call to set up an appointment.
