OK, it’s time to do a panel change. We did not find these boxes until we cut out all the sheet rock and pulled out the insulation. Not good to have splices covered up in the wall, OK?

So Matt and I got a call about a dryer not working properly. We had 240 V leaving the breaker but 75 V at the dryer receptacle. I told the owner that I’m guessing there is a covered junction box and look what we found after we cut the wall open. If they would’ve waited much longer, their next call would’ve been to the fire department. You silly handyman doing electrical work, please stick to plumbing.

Now that we are heading out of our incredible winter, I can post a couple of photos. This was me just driving home up our road on a little bit of ice. Yikes! It took the tow truck three attempts to pull my van out because his chained tow truck was sliding on the ice too.

If you have an FPE (Federal Pacific Electric) be forewarned. When I arrived on this service call, this receptacle still had 120 V going to it and the breaker was obviously still on. It should have tripped the breaker immediately. Needless to say, we were able to change her electrical panel out with a much safer brand.

FYI, loose electrical connections cause heat. This one had a bunch of insulation in it from a large nest of mice and thankfully it did not start a fire. Also, it melted right through the back of the meter base.
