Happy Groundhog Day!! Great news the groundhog did not see his shadow which means an early spring! Or not? Now’s the time to continue the winter work in the garden and plan for those spring projects. We are currently removing and properly disposing of invasive plant material from trees, wooded areas and fence lines. Garden design, horticultural fruit tree pruning, mulching, and organic landscape maintenance continues thru the winter season.

These are Allium bulbs that we planted last fall. Allium are available in a variety of of sizes and heights from miniature to giant. Allium are purple or white, deer resistant spring blooming bulbs. Now is a great time to plant Allium, Daffodils and other spring blooming bulbs.

“Installation of River Rock in Cross River” This is a River Rock installation along a driveway slope designed to control the flow of rain water from the neighboring property above. The first step was to divert water flow into a drainage swale along the driveway at the base of the hill. The slope and swale are lined with large decorative River Rock diverting water away from the home. This prevented the rain water from crossing the driveway flowing down the entrance walkway and up against the foundation. Managing steep slopes along with proper drainage helps protect the home and prevent water damage.

These are before and after photos of hand pruning a hemlock hedge in Bedford. Hand Pruning always provides a clean healthy cut. A powered shear shreds the plant creating a longer healing process, while making it more susceptible to insects and disease. When to prune a particular cultivar depends on the plants life cycle; timing is essential to plant health and bloom quality.
