I love learning! Not just random facts to spew off and collect, but knowledge gained about useful or helpful things.
When we are uneducated about something, it can sound too simple or overly complicated.
For example: I’m learning… rabbits “breed like rabbits”, sure, however, it is far deeper and more beautiful than that!! Many factors play into having a successful litter:
Female rabbits are not endlessly fertile. They also don’t go into heat, ovulate, or have a cycle, but instead become receptive to a buck every couple weeks then release eggs only upon mating.
-Heat causes infertility and stress.
-Diet can improve or diminish fertility
-Cooler tempts promote health & energy, encouraging breeding pairs to reproduce.
-Baby rabbits are extremely susceptible to death: cannibalism, failure to feed (whether too many kits or not enough milk/teets), doe abandonment, disease, insufficient nest (lack of fur lining or kindled out in the open altogether), genetics, predators, weaning issues, and MORE!
They don’t just have babies upon babies upon babies. Environment is everything. Timing is essential. And it’s truly survival of the fittest. Almost forgot to mention, most don’t start reproducing until they are 4+ months old. 🤷🏻♀️
So if you have immaculate conditions and never separate any rabbits from each other (which is a natural population control in and of itself- they are wildly territorial), congrats, you probably have a million baby bunnies bouncing around…
Please, teach me your secret!!!
Reminds me of the saying, “I slept like a baby.” 🤦🏻♀️ Uh… yeah… we all know that doesn’t add up. 🤪😝
