Yesterday we were able to hydro-seed this client's yard with a mix of native grass seed. It's an excellent way to create a yard with a xeriscape, native lawn that requires no watering once established. This property is in Boerne, TX.

Next time you see one, take a closer look at an ordinary clump of ball moss (Tillandsia recurvata). You are looking at a more venerable living thing than you probably realize. After a full year of growth, a ball moss seedling is generally only 0.5" tall with 3-4 leaves. A second year might add a few leaves and double the height. Taking this rate of growth into account, a good-sized ball moss might be 15 years or even older.

Ball moss grows on the underside of tree branches, but it is not a parasite. Instead, it is an epiphyte, a plant that gathers water and nutrients from the air and feeds itself through photosynthesis.
