While the holiday itself is at the end of the month, the beginning of May is deeply tied to its historical origins and broader military remembrance:

Historical Origins: The first formal observance of what would become Memorial Day took place on May 5, 1866, in Waterloo, New York, which is officially recognized as the holiday's birthplace.

Decoration Day Proclamation: On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan issued the proclamation for "Decoration Day," originally choosing May 30 as the day to decorate graves because flowers were expected to be in full bloom nationwide.

First Commemorations: One of the earliest recorded commemorations occurred on May 1, 1865, in Charleston, South Carolina, where thousands of recently freed Black residents held a parade to honor Union soldiers who had died in a Confederate prison camp.

Month of Remembrance: The start of May also includes other military-related observances, such as Armed Forces Day (honoring those currently serving), framing the entire month as a period of military reflection leading up to the "unofficial start of summer" on Memorial Day weekend.
