I’m Getting prepared to DIG my dahlias!!

Dahlias have been tagged/labeled✅
I’m in process now of cutting down the stems to be only about 6” tall from base of the plant. ✅

Then I’ll be gathering my tools to begin to DIG:
Garden Fork
Gloves
Plastic bins, crates or buckets to organize your tubers by variety to be placed in different containers.
How many dahlias you grew determines how many different containers you are going to need for storage.

Begin digging after several days of NO rain (the tubers are lighter & easier to lift out of the ground.
Stay positive!! Attitude is a little thing that makes a really big difference. If you grow a lot of dahlias like I do, just starting the process may feel intimidating.
So I break it down into one variety at a time.
One section of the garden at a time
I will have a list of every Dahlia I grow, and I will highlight them as I finish digging up that variety.
It visually helps me see that I am making progress. 😊

Last year it took me 3 long days of digging dahlias to lift all 352
This year is 750.
It will definitely be a process!
You will get so excited when you lift a dahlia out of the ground and see how many tubers are in a clump.
It’s amazing!

Let’s GROW flower friends 😊🌸

Dahlias #61 & #62

Both of these Dahlia’s, I started from seed.
Floret Flower Farm sold dahlia seed packets several years ago & I purchased the one called Bee’s Choice 🐝

I started the seeds in 4 inch little pots and eventually they grew and produced two very different blooms. Both blooms are open faced with the centers completely attracting every bee and butterfly that comes close!! Both grow to be little over 4’ tall.

🌸 Remember- when you grow Dahlia’s from seed, they will NOT be genetically identical to the mother dahlia. Only when you grow tubers, will they be genetically identical to the mother dahlia.

The yellow Bee’s choice Dahlia has pointy almost pinwheel like Petals with red detailing on the ends of the petals.

The blush pink Bee’s choice Dahlia has beautiful oval shaped petals & a larger yellow eye or center.

I’ve grown the 2 of these from their tuber production for the last four years. they are grown specifically to attract pollinators 🐝🦋

Hi flower friends!
I’ve been talking a lot about Dahlia’s lately.

There are many different ways to finish your dahlia season.
Do you leave them in the ground ?
Do you dig them up ?
Do you clean off all the soil right away ?
Do you store them in clumps ?? or do you begin to divide and separate the tubers?
How will you store your tubers?
Where will you store your tubers ?

When I first began growing, Dahlia’s, these were some of the questions that I had, and I went searching for answers

I follow several flower farmers on social media & I found out that there are many options to some of these questions. And at the end of the day, you have to figure out what’s works best for you., your budget, and your location.

🌸 These are 2 books that I purchased and use as my primary resource for all things Dahlias!! Both authors provide detailed information in easy to understand writing that is based on years of experience & from multiple sources.
What a GIFT!!!

This coming week, I will be sharing more about my end of season process with digging up the tubers, washing them off and storing them.
