And in the abundance of the August garden, beauty is on its way out πŸ₯€
Tomato plants love to be sick, I’m convinced. In the 8 years I’ve been gardening, I’ve observed that the moment when tomatoes begin to ripen is the same moment that the tomato plant succumbs to sickness - whether it be blight, leaf spot, or wilt.
They usually hold on long enough to finish their life cycle, filling our buckets with an abundance of the BEST ripe tomatoes, but their decline is harsh and dramatic.

One of the most common questions I’ve been asked is how to properly care for tomato plants to ensure they don’t become sickly - as if the gardener is to blame. And while I’m sure there is probably a strict, high maintenance regimen that could guarantee the longest, healthiest life span possible for a tomato plant, I don’t see it as necessary.

My tomatoes are riddled with blight. We’ve had an intensely wet, humid summer that has not been kind to the plants. Throughout the season as they matured, I consistently battled the blight by pruning diseased branches and spritzing fungicide.
But once I notice the fruits start to blush, I stop intervening and start picking tomatoes. Sickly, stressed plants are inevitable and, honestly, they produce the best tasting fruits! πŸ…

The August garden is where beauty coincides with death, and where the focus of the gardener shifts from growing the garden to preserving the harvest. πŸ«™

I’d love to see your beautiful, wild, unruly August gardens in the comments! πŸ‘’

πŸ‘’ Garden Update πŸ‘’
The heat of July brings abundance πŸ₯•πŸ§…

The summer garden is at its peak and I just wanted to share a bit from mine!
πŸ₯¬ A GLORIOUS cabbage - my most prized garden plant at the moment!!
πŸ₯• Our first carrot harvest
πŸ§… A few onions - there’s still 100+ in the ground!
🌻 The first Sunspot Dwarf sunflower bloom
🌢️ The most pretty pepper plant in the garden with a name that doesn’t match its beauty - the Fish pepper 🐟

NO ripe tomatoes so far, but the plants are loaded. πŸ… And although my family LOVES some garden heirloom tomatoes, I’m thankful that I have time to process all the other harvests coming in first πŸ˜†

I hope everyone’s gardens are thriving! Show me in the comments 😍

I’m canning a year’s worth of strawberry jam today πŸ“

If you’re new to canning, jam is the BEST way to get started! It’s simple, straightforward, and the most time consuming part is just prepping the fruit.
You don’t even need an β€œofficial” water bath canner! I just use a big metal stock pot with a lid and a rack in the bottom.

The Ball strawberry jam recipe is my tried and true, and these strawberries will give us about 10 pints of jam - enough to last us a whole year!

You can find these beautiful local strawberries at Miller's Orchard to make your own jam! πŸ“πŸ«™
And as always if you have any questions, feel welcomed to reach out πŸ‘’
