GRFD James DiGiovanna Memorial Golf Outing Donates $10,000 to Project Purple's 2nd Annual Steps For a Cure 5K in Honor of James DiGiovanna
GREAT RIVER, N.Y. — The Great River -East Islip community came together on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at Heckscher State Park for the 2nd Annual Project Purple Steps for a Cure 5K, a heartfelt event held in memory of James DiGiovanna. Family, friends, firefighters, local businesses, and community members united with a common purpose—to raise awareness and critical funding for pancreatic cancer research.
The event was organized by James DiGiovanna, Jr., who established the Annual 5K to honor his father's legacy while supporting Project Purple, a nonprofit organization dedicated to funding Pancreatic Cancer research, providing patient support, and advancing early detection initiatives.
The 2026 event was a tremendous success, raising more than $36,300 to support Project Purple's mission. One of the day's most significant moments came when the GRFD James DiGiovanna Memorial Golf Outing presented a generous $10,000 donation, demonstrating its continued commitment to honoring one of its own and supporting the fight against Pancreatic Cancer.
James DiGiovanna dedicated 20 years of service to the Great River Fire Department. During his distinguished career, he served as a firefighter, Ex-Chief, and Fire Commissioner, earning the respect and admiration of fellow members and the community through his leadership, integrity, and unwavering dedication to public service. His legacy of service continues to inspire those who knew him and those who continue to serve.
"This event is about much more than crossing a finish line," said James DiGiovanna, Jr. "It's about honoring my father's legacy, supporting families affected by Pancreatic Cancer, and helping fund research that brings us closer to better treatments and, ultimately, a cure."
