A taste of some of the incredible flora in Southeast Alaska and Denali National Park. Each hike included giant diversity thanks to varying microclimates, from giant ferns and crazy mosses, to high alpine wildflowers and ground covers, and a few like the monkshood in Photo 1, that can kill you!
The beautiful fireweed was blooming in Homer and showing its red fall color in Denali.

Phlox paniculata ‘Jeana’ has been shown in trials at Mt. Cuba Center to attract more butterflies than other phlox varieties, and it is definitely the case in my own garden. Its nectar is especially attractive to Eastern Tiger Swallowtails like these, along with Monarchs.

Planted in spring of 2025, this garden of nearly all North American natives is really coming into its own this summer. It is maddeningly difficult to capture the full beauty, but I tried this morning, as hummingbirds darted about and bees and multiple other insects covered the flowers

Happy first day of spring! While it may not feel especially spring-like here in New England just yet, we know brighter, warmer days are not far off.
