I was getting set up on a job in Steubenville the other day when this guy popped his head out to see what was going on. He didn't seem too worried about me either.

When I got closer to take a look around, I noticed raccoon prints all over the deck right above his hole. That means either they're sharing the space, or the raccoons are using his tunnels to travel around the property. Either way, that's two problems living under one deck.

This is more common than most people realize. Once a groundhog digs a burrow, raccoons, skunks, and opossums are quick to move in or use it as a highway. Over time, all that digging can weaken decks, sheds, and foundations.

If you're noticing holes or tracks around your home, give Pest Pirates a call and we'll come take a look πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ

Fresh off a job near Tappan Lake in Scio πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ

De-webbing like this is part of the routine work we do. We knock down webs and egg sacs and clean up the debris around windows, doors and siding. It makes the house look better, and it takes away the spots spiders like to rebuild in.

Fall is the best time to get ahead of next spring's bugs. Right now, stink bugs, boxelder bugs, lady beetles, cluster flies and spiders are looking for warm cracks and gaps around your home to spend the winter. Whatever gets in now is what you'll be finding on your windows come spring.

No one can promise to keep every flying insect out of a house, but treating now can really cut down the chances of them getting in and settling for the winter.

Get ahead of the bugs before they get ahead of you. Call to find out where pricing starts in your area.

πŸ¦‡ During a recent inspection, our crew found several ways bats were getting into this home. These photos aren't every entry point we found, just a few worth showing you.

Two of them were easy to spot: a wide gap right at the gable peak where the trim meets the roofline, and a slim opening along the fascia where the roof edge doesn't sit flush. 🏠

The third one is the one that surprises people. It's barely wider than a pencil, tucked into a corner where the fascia meets the roof edge. A previous repair attempt was made here, but it actually left the gap slightly bigger than before instead of sealing it. Bats only need about 3/8 of an inch to squeeze through, so "too small to matter" is often exactly where they're getting in.

We also found droppings collecting on a windowsill. πŸ” Bat guano can look a lot like mouse droppings at a glance, which is why bat problems get misdiagnosed before exclusion work even starts.

Hearing scratching in the attic? Finding droppings you can't explain? Want a second opinion on a DIY fix? Give Pest Pirates a call. βœ… We find every entry point, not just the obvious ones.

🚨 One tire. One tiny puddle. An entire ecosystem. 🦟

We found an old tire sitting against a house right here in Cadiz, in our own Harrison County backyard, and this is exactly what we expected to find... a miniature mosquito nursery inside.

That little puddle was PACKED with life such as wrigglers hanging at the surface breathing through their little tube, diving the second they felt movement, plus a swarm of tiny seed shrimp cruising around in the same water. We got it all on video and honestly it's kind of wild to watch.

This is the part most Harrison County homeowners never see. A tire, a clogged gutter, a saucer under a flowerpot... literally anything holding water the size of a bottle cap is a mosquito factory. Egg to biting adult in as little as 7 to 14 days. It may not be much to start but by the time you're getting eaten alive in your own Cadiz backyard, that generation already hatched weeks ago.

Dumping standing water helps, but it's not the full story. Mosquitoes spend most of the day resting deep in your shrubs and hedges, not buzzing around waiting for you to notice them. We broke down why that matters (and what actually works) here πŸ‘‰ https://thepestpirates.com/mosquitoes-in-eastern-ohio/

Got a tire, a tarp, or a low spot in your Harrison County yard holding water? πŸ’§ You may not see it, but that's exactly the kind of spot mosquitoes are using right now.

Send us a message or give us a call at (740) 273-3877 πŸ“± and we'll come out, walk the property, and show you exactly where they're breeding and resting before it turns into a summer-long problem.

Your citronella candle isn't failing because it's a bad product. It's failing because the mosquitoes aren't where you're burning it.

Mosquitoes don't hang out in the open during the day. They're resting in the shaded interior of your shrubs, along your fence line, at the wooded edge of your property, waiting for dusk. Up to 90% of your yard's population is just sitting in your hedgerow right now.

Citronella, DEET, bug zappers, Thermacell every one of them is designed to protect a body. None of them touch the place where mosquitoes actually live. That's why you can do everything right and still get eaten alive every time you walk outside.

We wrote a full breakdown of why this happens and what actually works, mosquito biology in eastern Ohio, which species are active when, what disease risk looks like, and how a professional barrier program actually collapses the problem at its source.

🐝 This is why routine pest maintenance matters.
We were called out to a new commercial customer this week for a general pest spray, they were seeing some bugs around the office. Nothing urgent, just the kind of thing you want to stay ahead of.

When we did our walkthrough, we opened their weatherproof outdoor outlet covers and found this.

Paper wasp nests. Built right inside the covers, hidden behind the sealed lids. One of them I wasn't even comfortable opening for a photo because i couldn't tell how many were in there until I handled it.

The customer had no idea. Why would they? These covers are designed to keep water out, which also makes them the perfect protected spot for wasps to set up.

This is exactly what you get with a recurring treatment plan, not just the bugs you know about, but the ones quietly building a problem in places you never think to check. A one-time spray treats what you see. Regular service means someone's actually walking your property with trained eyes.

Wasps near electrical outlets also aren't something to ignore. Nesting material + heat + live wiring is a combination nobody wants.

If you've got outdoor outlet covers, junction boxes, or utility panels you haven't checked in a while, now's a good time. πŸ‘€

🌿 Ticks aren't spread evenly across your yard, they're hiding in specific spots.

The edges where your lawn meets the woods, along fence lines, in your ornamental hedges and shrubs, around brush piles, that's where they're concentrated. If you've got any of those on your property, you've got tick territory.

Here's the thing, some of the most dangerous ones are nearly impossible to spot. The blacklegged tick nymph is about the size of a poppy seed. You likely won't even feel the bite. Yet it's one of the primary carriers of Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis.

Eastern Ohio is also home to the American dog tick and the lone star tick, each with their own active seasons and their own list of diseases they can carry, including Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, and alpha-gal syndrome.

Want to know which ticks are out right now, where they're lurking in your yard, and what they're capable of? We put it all together in one place
