Mid 1800’s home repairs in the village of Penn Yan.
This room was originally part of a porch attached to the main structure. At some point it was probably converted into a summer kitchen, and then later, walls were built on bricks in the dirt to enclose the space. Maybe there was a reason to build walls so hastily, but for whatever reason it was, now the walls need undermined and new footers poured to start over with structural longevity in mind.
The walls have sunk into the ground as the wood framing returns to earth after a couple hundred years of exposure to damp ground contact. I’ll jack up the sagging walls, pour a new footer and foundation wall level with the main structures foundation height.
Today the wind was blowing from the south and bringing that unique aroma of roasted buckwheat from Birkett Mills, right through this part of the village.
