New (to me) bug! I was bumbling about my various gardens and found the Dogwood Sawfly - Macremphytus tarsatus - munching on one of my Red Twig Dogwoods. Its white fluff was a strange sight at first but after looking more closely I saw who it was. They are hosted only by various Dogwoods and the larvae can eat a lot of leaves. They are native to our area so consider their spot in the ecosystem before removing them. Birds, lizards, and frogs love to snack on these guys and unless there are tons of them, the Dogwoods will be fine. Just plant more Dogwoods to share:)

“It may be that when we no longer know what to do,
we have come to our real work
and when we no longer know which way to go,
we have begun our real journey.

The mind that is not baffled is not employed.
The impeded stream is the one that sings.”

-Wendell Berry

I often walk down to the confluence of Hominy Creek and S. Hominy Creek. There, a small bridge passes over where the waters flow together. Helene was very hard on this spot as you can imagine. The bridge was damaged, pipes along the banks were ripped out of the ground, and massive Sycamore trees were splayed across the battered river bed. The bare stream banks were perfect invitations for opportunistic invasive plants to set their roots.
However, when I began to notice the plants emerging here, I was so excited. Yes, there are still tons of invasives like kudzu, stilt grass, and porcelain berry, but wow! There are so many beautiful native plants exploding here!
I’ve spotted significant amounts of Joe Pye W**d, Primrose, Partridge Pea, Garden Phlox, Sumac, Wingstem, Bear’s Foot, Goldenrod, Jewelweed, and even some Yarrow. I’m sure there are others, too.
It is thrilling to see these stream banks come back to life after such a wild flood, especially when they are full of such resilient and bio diverse plant life. I know the wildlife and pollinators are so happy to see these friendly plants too!🌿

Harvested the Larkspur seeds! This beautiful annual was such a hit among the pollinators and I can’t wait to cast more seed soon. For now, I’ve emptied out tons of small, pitcher-like seed pods and have them safely stored.

Pocket pollinator garden transformation: I carved out a small area along the fence that was once covered in bittersweet and privet for a sweet little garden. With the wild rains recently, it has absolutely blown up. As you can see in the video (in comments), this area can get a lot of water. On the other side of the fence, the water runs down through the lawn and driveway quickly eroding away the ground. While this garden is small, it helped to soak up a lot of this water preventing it from flowing down hill or into the adjacent basement area. I was also thrilled to see everything just pop back up after so many torrential downpours. In the fall, we will expand it into a full blown rain garden adding more water-friendly plants like Cardinal Flower!
This area is packed with a Red Twig Dogwood, Viburnum, Black and Brown Eyed Susan’s, Dwarf Coreopsis, Mountain Mint, New England Aster, Liatris, and Rattlesnake Master. Soon the purple aster and liatris and silvery flowers of the R. Master will make the yellows and greens really pop here.
