🚨 Thinking about painting your home this year? Read this first.

Most homeowners don’t realize this:

👉 Over 80% of paint jobs fail early because of poor prep work — not bad paint.

Before you spend thousands on a paint job, here are 4 things you should check on your home right now.

🔎 1. Peeling or Bubbling Paint

Paint should sit flat and tight to the surface.

If it’s peeling or bubbling, it usually means:

• Moisture got behind the paint
• The surface wasn’t prepped properly

Once that happens, paint can start failing within just a couple years.

🔎 2. Cracked or Missing Caulk

Look around:

• Windows
• Doors
• Trim boards

Cracked caulk might not seem like a big deal…

…but even a small gap can allow water into your walls, which can eventually lead to rot and mold.

🔎 3. Soft Wood or Dark Spots

Press gently on:

• Window trim
• Fascia boards
• Sills

If it feels soft, that’s usually wood rot starting.

And painting over it won’t fix the problem.

🔎 4. Chalky or Faded Paint

Rub your hand across your siding.

If white powder comes off, that’s called chalking.

It means the sun has broken down the paint’s protective layer.

💡 Here’s the part most people miss:

A professional paint job should spend 50–70% of the time on prep work, including:

✔ Pressure washing
✔ Scraping loose paint
✔ Full caulking
✔ Repairing damaged wood

If this step is rushed, the paint job may only last 2–3 years instead of 7–10+.

⚠️ Before hiring a painter, ask these questions:

• What does your prep process include?
• Do you replace damaged wood or just paint over it?
• What products do you use?
• How do you protect landscaping and surfaces?

If they can’t answer clearly… that’s a red flag.
