I continuously hear from a lot of homeowners who have received bad information in regards to aerobic septic systems. These systems run on a different concept than a conventional septic system with lateral lines. First, the tank typically has 3 chambers. The first chamber is where everything from the house enters the tank. Ideally, no solids should enter the subsequent chambers. This tank is normally around 300-400 gallons total. The second chamber is where air is introduced to the effluent. Then finally the liquid will go into the pump tank where some sort of chlorine is introduced so that the water is safe to sprinkle your yard. These systems require quite a bit of maintenance. Depending on the number of people using the system, they will typically need to be pumped every 12 to 24 months. You do not want solids to enter the downstream chambers, especially the final pump tank. Solids, especially in that pump tank, can cause the sprinkler pump to burn up prematurely.

Don’t think this is salvageable. Wasn’t a good design to begin with. There’s 3-4 inches of sludge and roots going back as far as we could see inside the chambers. Biomat had built up and ground was not absorbing any water.
