Look what I grew guys!!!! This thing is heavy and massive. We shall see how drying this goes. If you have any suggestions for sunflower seeds I'd gladly take them! Definitely growing more of these bad boys next year.

TW: Sick chicken/death. I want to share the hard parts of this "simple life" and not just the pretty gardens.
I spend a lot of time sitting on overturned 5 gallon buckets. Especially when there's a sick chicken. I am not a vet, and vets are really expensive. There's only really a few (cost effective) things you can try with a chicken anyway. Electrolytes or B12 in a syringe. Closely monitoring their food and water intake. Diatomaceous earth baths in case of mites. And Epsom salt baths in case they're eggbound. These things have worked for me before, and with every chicken I learn more.
But sometimes all of that doesn't work. We lost Bashful today. I go over and over in my head what I could have done differently, but the main lesson with Bashful is that I might have waited too long to intervene. I knew she wasn't doing well last week, but we had a lot going on and I hoped it would work itself out. You know I won't be making that mistake again.

We finally made it! We have tomato's. All it took was a little bit of pruning and trellising to expose them to the sun.

Did you know that the more a tomato is exposed to the sun the quicker it'll turn. However too much sun can kill it.

Can't wait to start making salsa and pasta sauces ❤️🙏

We love our evening strolls through the property. We hit the garden first to see if anything is ready to harvest. Then the orchard to check on the trees, raspberry bushes, and blueberry bushes. After that we check on the grape vines to see if anything needs to be re-trellised or if any can be harvested. Next we walk to the blackberry patch to harvest those and have a snack along the way. Then for the final check point - the coop. We gather up the eggs as our final harvest for the day.

Please, please, please turn red/orange. Ugh I started these from seed in April and we have been waiting so patiently for them to turn...... But now we are craving these delicious veggies. I guess I'm going to have to start these from seed a lot sooner than I thought 🙃. February?????

This little puppers hiked up her first ever mountain the other day! She exceed beyond all of my expectations for how she was going to do and behave. She listened every step of the way.

We've got two more mountains to climb till she completes the puppy challenge for ADK this year. Couldn't ask for a better pup.

I’m sure you’re as ready for this relentless rain to be over as my garden is. Water is necessary for life - but too much water and the ground says “Alright, enough already” and closes up shop on the whole absorption thing and I’m left walking through mud puddles to get to my garden. Luckily, I’ve worked the soil just enough that there aren’t really puddles in the garden...yet. In the meantime though the vegetables come off the vines or lift out of the soil bright and colorful, leaves flinging rainwater everywhere. Sometimes I’ll look up from my zucchini plants towards the house and see only a bare outline of the logs through the Sunday morning fog and mist.

Speaking of zucchini! This massive summer squash is the highlight of the week so we knew this week’s recipe would be zucchini, but we could not decide on what recipe to use. I wanted to give you my mom’s zucchini bread recipe. Alyssa was convinced that everyone already uses and loves their mom’s zucchini bread recipe and doesn’t need another one (she prefers her own mom’s recipe to my mom’s). Since Alyssa is the one typing these letters as I dictate them while washing the veggies and packing the boxes...here’s the recipe she wants you to try. She makes it as a side for summer dinner parties, using 2 or 3 cast iron griddles at once.

Come by the tea lounge and grab a bag of veggies. I have an extra.

Chickens really hate change! Two weeks ago I moved their roosting bar and made a new nesting box so I could clean their coop more easily. However, the chickens were not happy with me and they retaliated. I was only getting 6-8 eggs a day and I have 24 chickens!

They are finally settling down and starting to lay more. Thank God. But man, I thought humans were stubborn. I guess if I make any more changes to the coop I'll have to do it during the winter when they don't lay at all.

This is the first week of carrots! I’m so happy with them. This is my first time growing carrots. In all my reading and research, something I’ve learned is how important it is to buy organic when it comes to root crops like carrots. Root crops grow in the soil of course, which means that they absorb everything that is in the soil - including pesticides and herbicides used in traditional farming. My soil is healthy, rich, dark, and teeming with good things, and my carrots are an example of that.

If you'd like some carrots I have and extra CSA box at the loka leaf tea lounge or DM and we can figure something out.

So yeah, I wake up at 5am every day (sometimes I sleep in until 6 on Sunday). Most days, I work for an additional hour after Alyssa signs off from her full-time job. That's a 13 hour day, and it's not like I'm sitting in front of a computer. It's super important that I eat properly and take care of myself, and rest if something starts to hurt. Eating fresh veggies from my gardens is easy for me. I LOVE salad. What's not easy? Taking a break, sitting on the couch, stretching out my knee or my shoulder, and getting enough sleep. I'm slowly making changes to take better care if myself, starting with yoga in the morning with Alyssa...and going to bed when it's still light out. I love these long summer days though.
