Here’s the full story behind one of our most memorable reclaimed timber projects.

A 150-year-old white oak gunstock barn frame from Indiana now stands again near Moab, Utah. We took it down, restored the timbers, repaired the joinery, and raised it at Canyonlands Ranch.

Along with the barn, there were two other log cabins on the property we had a hand in building. One was a historic on-site restoration. The other was hand crafted from timber we reclaimed from a different barn in the Midwest.

Gunstock posts like these are rare. Over the years viewing hundreds of barns across the country and taking down more than 50 historic structures, we’ve only seen these gunstock frames a couple of times.

We didn’t cut these trees or hand hew these timbers. We just picked up where the American pioneers left off.

We hope you enjoy this full story!

A little piece of pioneer history, created into something new.

A one-of-one reclaimed timber frame built for Nantucket Island.

What started as historic Midwest barn timbers became a completely custom structure designed around our client’s vision.

History rich reclaimed material. Traditional joinery. Modern engineering. Built to last for generations.

Progress is moving along on what was once a historic dovetail cabin.

Right now the structure is staged as we begin preparing it for its next chapter: a custom riverfront home built from reclaimed pioneer craftsmanship.

Our goal with projects like this is not to erase the original structure, but to preserve the craftsmanship that made it worth saving in the first place. The hand-cut dovetails, the aged logs, and the character of the cabin remain at the center of the build while the structure is carefully adapted into a modern home built to last for generations.

Excited to share more details, design updates, and build progress throughout the summer as this one takes shape!
