Yes, it’s cold outside, yes, it’s windy. Soon there will be the cold, the wind and blowing snow.
Your heating equipment may struggle to keep up and maintain set temperatures. Turning the thermostat set temp up higher than normal, likely won’t fix the issue. It’s trying and running at max capacity already.
Things to keep in mind,
- Your heating equipment is sized to the home specifications at a certain outdoor temperature, which is typically around zero degrees here in Michigan.
- With the extreme cold temperatures and added wind, your heating system equipment may be falling short even at max capacity.
- Again, turning the thermostat set temp higher, will not make the equipment run any harder, especially if it’s not keeping up already.
Things you can do to help,
- If your heating system has an air filter, change it more frequently in conditions like this. Doing so can help reduce accesive stress on the system.
- Run a less restrictive air filter, we recommend running a MERV rating of 8 or less in most systems. When it comes to equipment air filters, “more expensive” doesn’t always mean better, it may filter better, but that added filtration can add to system stress.
- Cover windows and doors. You’d be surprised at what a simple window/door covering can do in weather like this.
- Block air drafts around door kick plates with a rolled up towel or a draft blocker.
- Keep furnace vent pipes clear of any snow or ice buildup. Doing so can save yourself from a service call or possible carbon monoxide issues.
- Keep gas meters and LP tanks clear of any snow or ice buildup. Doing so can save you from losing gas supply due to regulator freeze ups in extreme temperatures.
- LP customers, always monitor your LP tank. Sometimes the device that monitors them can lose reception due to snow and ice.
- Thermostat have batteries? Whens the last time those were changed? Doing so can save you from another possible service call.
- Bundle up when inside and outside. Never hurts to have some extra warmth.
Most of all, stay warm and stay safe!!!
