🌳 Don’t overlook the mighty Sycamore tree!

The American Sycamore is a classic native tree and one of the largest hardwoods in eastern North America. While mature sycamores can get very large, homeowners with space often pass them over in favor of more commonly planted shade or ornamental trees.

Fast-growing when young, sycamores develop into spectacular specimen trees with broad canopies & unmatched character. Their distinctive bark exfoliates in patches, exposing white, cream, or gray tones that make them instantly recognizable – especially during the winter.

Sycamores can sometimes get Sycamore Anthracnose, a fungal disease that can cause leaf drop in cool, wet springs. The good news? The trees usually recover well and often produce a fresh flush of leaves once warmer weather hits.

We recently found the young sycamores pictured at a nursery and bought them immediately as they can be surprisingly hard to find.

Don’t give up on the Sycamore. It’s one of our favorites!

We can always come back later. A mama bird may not. 🪺🐦‍⬛

While doing some yard work at home, WTL’s own Bill Davies noticed a robin making some noise. He took a closer look and found this nest tucked safely into a shrub – complete with hatchlings and beautiful blue eggs! Bill snapped a quick picture and then put his project on hold for the time being.

This time of year, nests can be hidden and hard to find. That’s why we always encourage our crews to slow down and respect the wildlife sharing our landscapes.

The imprints in the first two pictures are of birds that hit glass at full speed.

Reflections of trees and sky can turn windows into invisible but deadly hazards. The good news is that this is preventable.

As tree care professionals, we think beyond the trees to the wildlife they support. A few simple changes to your windows and landscape can make a real difference.

Our friends at Bedford Audubon have lots of info on how to easily make your glass visible - just visit their website.

Did you know maple sap starts flowing when nights are cold and days are warmer? Our own Stephanie took advantage of this weather pattern to try sugaring for the first time. She recently tapped in and the sap started flowing!

She collected about 8.5 gallons of sap and, after boiling it down, ended up with just about a quart of pure maple syrup.

Big thanks to Bri Hart from White Oak Farm in Yorktown for helping Steph get started!

If you have Sugar Maples – or any trees you want to keep healthy and thriving, we’re here to help. 🌳Reach out to our team anytime.

Snow or shine, our crews show up! After the blizzard, we started by clearing out our yard, getting equipment up and running, and being ready for taking care of our customers from storm damage cleanups to routine tree work. Even in winter. 🪾❄️🌨️

We hope everybody hunkers down and stays safe during our blizzard. As a tree company, we know heavy snow and wind can lead to downed trees and other storm damage. If you need us call 914–238-0069 or email us at [email protected].
