288 sets of screws washers and nuts later, these very pretty planter boxes are ready for some topsoil! This repeat client asked me to build some boxes with treated lumber but the cost was going to be over their budget. I suggested these galvanized metal planter boxes from Home Depot. The client was ecstatic that you can order them in a variety of different colors. I think these look so much better than the treated lumber boxes that end up rotting away over time. Sure, the metal will eventually rust but they will still last longer and they are so much prettier!

Last year, I restored the steel window grates on the front of this home in North Charleston. It was November, nearing the end of painting season, and I wasn’t able to finish all the windows. At the end of the project last year, we randomly picked this week to finish the remaining windows. I don’t think we could’ve picked a better week! The weather was perfect, not too warm and no rain! It’s amazing what some elbow grease and paint can do to improve the look of a home!

Finally got this homeowner’s new shutter installed. We wanted to keep the historical integrity of this 1920’s home, so we custom ordered a wooden shutter from a local lumber mill. Once it was completed eight weeks later, I sprayed two coats of “Charleston Green” on it. My new part-time helper, Corie, helped me get it installed this week. I’m looking forward to having her help me this summer while she has a break before she begins nursing school!

I love a good challenge! The homeowner asked me to replace cracked window panes and reglaze one of their historic windows. I had never done this type of work before, but after researching the process I felt confident I could do it. It turned out beautifully and I learned a lot about window restoration. You’re never too old to learn new tricks!

Installed a baby gate and secured a loose exterior trim panel for a wonderful family today!
I get a lot of calls where people are unable to find somebody to do small tasks. I don’t mind them at all and usually I end up taking care of a couple other things while I’m there. I love what I do and I love helping people with their homes!

Near completion, my current project involves a custom-built fireplace mantle and bookcase in downtown Charleston. The homeowner, an interior designer, was aware of my lack of direct experience in this type of custom project, but has always been satisfied with my previous work's quality and trusted my abilities to do a great job. With no background as a professional cabinetry builder and lacking expensive equipment, the challenge is significant; however, research and problem-solving skills are helping me deliver amazing work on this project! The focus this weekend will be on creating Shaker-style panel doors for the bookcases and panels for the fireplace.

I had the privilege of assisting a returning client in initiating the renovation of a half bathroom, where she drew design inspiration from AI and a thrift store mirror. The project now features a new light fixture, faucet with pop-up drain, and board and batten walls, with the homeowner set to complete it with paint and wall stenciling.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas holiday with family and friends! We enjoyed a quiet day with family and chicken piccata dinner made by my wife who is a very talented cook. I am very lucky!

I got a 3-D printer for Christmas this year! I had been wanting one for a while but didn’t want to invest the money for one. Since my wife is a great shopper, she was able to find a 50% off deal for a very nice 3-D printer recommended by my nephew who has had a few for a while. There have been times on jobs that I’ve had where I needed a replacement part, adapter etc. custom made and I would reach out to one of my nephews to print one for me and now I can do it myself! I have had fun the last couple of days printing toys and bookmarks to help me familiarize myself with the printer. So excited to add the printer to my repertoire of tools!

It’s Transformation Tuesday! Last week I finished up an exterior painting job for a homeowner with steel metal framing around the windows and front door. I’ve done this type of work before and it is very tedious! It takes quite a bit of time to remove all the peeling paint and rust before applying metal primer and two coats of paint. It would’ve been easier to remove the framing, sandblast and spray paint but the homeowner is a senior and did not want them removed as they provide a sense of security for her. So I honored her wishes and did the work with the framing still attached to the house. It turned out nicely and I was lucky to have had amazing weather last week to get the job completed 😎

It’s Transformation Tuesday! Last month I donated 4 hours of my time to a silent auction raising funds for the Folly Beach Sea Turtle watch program. The winner of the silent auction had me custom build and install these shelves in her kitchen. It was a chilly day but the view didn’t disappoint 😍
