We're celebrating back to school with another fun tree fact:
The Blue Ridge Mountains appear blue because the oak and poplar trees that make up most of the forest release isoprene, which then reacts with the ozone and UV light to create the blue haze.

Happy 250th Birthday America!!!

Looking back, in a young country without grand buildings or established institutions, trees and nature served as the natural infrastructure for our young nation. All those trees did their work centuries ago. Our job now is to plant the trees that will tell the next chapter.

This fall, we’ll honor the past and plant for the future. We will be partnering with the Garden Club of Virginia and Casey Trees to plant 50 trees in public places to commemorate America's 250th.

In the spirit of a letter written by Thomas Jefferson to John Adams in 1816, two old friends, both near the end of their lives:
“I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.”

The Buttonwood
May 17, 1792, exactly 234 years ago last month. Twenty-four brokers gathered outside 68 Wall Street under a buttonwood tree, what we call an American sycamore. They signed a two-line agreement: trade only with each other, charge a uniform commission. That document is the founding charter of what became the New York Stock Exchange.
Nicknamed the buttonwood because the dense, fine-grained wood was used by early colonists to make sturdy buttons for clothing and shoes.

The Live Oak
The USS Constitution, aka Old Ironsides, earned the nickname during the War of 1812, when British cannonballs literally bounced off her hull. The secret? Southern live oak — one of the densest, strongest woods in North America.
Trees didn’t just symbolize the new nation; they built it. Oak for ships. Pine for houses. Hickory for tools.

The Charter Oak
It was 1687, nearly a century before the American Revolution. An English governor came to Hartford to seize Connecticut’s royal charter — the document guaranteeing self-government. In a dramatic meeting, the candles were snuffed out. When they were relit, the charter had gone missing. It was hidden in the hollow of a massive white oak. The charter survived. Self-government survived!
The tree stood until 1856.

In August 1765, the Sons of Liberty staged one of the early acts of defiance, meeting under a massive elm near the Boston Common to protest the British Stamp Act. That tree became the original Liberty Tree — an open-air town hall and beacon of colonial defiance. Nearly every colony designated its own Liberty Tree after that.
When the British occupied Boston in 1775, soldiers cut it down for firewood. A petty act that backfired — it became a martyr.

Lafayette later said: “The world should never forget the spot where once stood Liberty Tree.”

A year before the Boston Tea Party, there was the Pine Tree Riot. The Crown marked the tallest white pines as property of the King with three hatchet strokes — the “King’s Broad Arrow” — claiming them as Royal Navy masts, even on private land. In 1772, colonists in Weare, New Hampshire attacked the British sheriff sent to enforce it. Many say this early riot emboldened the colonists prior to the Tea Party.

If the white pine was a spark, then next week's tree became the rallying point.
