Yard Rescue | Aspen Treatment Plan Update

After consulting with a Wilbur Ellis chemical rep, we landed on a treatment plan for the struggling quaking aspens: OxiPhos and Link Deep Root.

OxiPhos reads like a powerhouse. Its active ingredients—hydrogen peroxide and mono- and di-potassium salts of phosphorous acid—give it a dual punch. The hydrogen peroxide helps kill off pathogens, while the phosphorous (in the form of phosphite) acts as an immune booster, helping the tree fight off systemic infections from within.

To support recovery, we’re also applying Link Deep Root, which is designed to promote vigorous root health—exactly what these trees need to bounce back from the edge.

Since the leaves aren't showing signs of surface diseases like powdery mildew, we’re fairly confident that the issue is systemic rather than foliar. This approach targets that kind of problem directly.

A quick but critical reminder: Always read the label.
It’s not just about staying within legal use—it’s also about preventing unintended chemical interactions. In this case, the OxiPhos label specifically warns against mixing it with products containing metal ions. Link Deep Root contains iron, an essential plant nutrient, but one that doesn’t play nicely with OxiPhos.

To avoid causing more harm than good, I’ll be applying each product separately, using a simple soil drench technique with a 5-gallon bucket. I plan to leave a week or two between applications to give the trees time to absorb the treatment and avoid any negative interactions.

More updates to come as we monitor their progress.

Yard Rescue | Learning the Hard Way: Quaking Aspen Edition

We all make mistakes, so here’s one of mine. Transitioning into landscape management has been both exciting and humbling—especially since it’s an area where I’ve got less hands-on experience. On property, we’ve got close to 30 quaking aspens, and frankly, none of them have looked great since I arrived.

Most of these trees sit on a large berm built to provide privacy for our MSU patients. The top of this mound was designated as a native area, which essentially means it's supposed to be left untouched for most of the year. I’ve been slowly working to bring it back to life—with plans for wildflowers and a solid stand of healthy aspens in the future.

But today, while mowing, I noticed several of the trees were showing fall color—a good two months early. On closer inspection, I realized something important: the dense clover I'd let grow around the trunks was holding in moisture and choking the base of the trees. That trapped moisture likely fast-tracked disease in an already struggling grove.

I’ve since cleared a vegetation ring around each tree and shut off irrigation for the weekend to help things dry out. I also spotted a mycelium flare-up at the base of one, further confirming a fungal issue.

Next steps: I’ve reached out to a local chemical rep for advice. My current plan is to apply the fungicide chlorothalonil to treat the disease and a phosphite product to boost plant immunity and give the trees a shot at recovery.

Stay tuned—I'll share the treatment plan once it's finalized.

From Fairways to Frontlines

After 10 years in golf turf management, I shifted gears and now oversee the landscapes at a rural hospital. It’s still turf. Still science. But now with a community-first mindset.

I’ve gone from prepping for championship conditions to creating safe, restorative spaces for patients, staff, and families — and I wouldn’t trade it. These days, it’s about making every patch of green work smarter, last longer, and serve a bigger purpose.

I’m also passionate about sharing what I’ve learned over the years — from turf health to irrigation tips — to help folks get the most out of their own yards. Whether you’re battling weeds, chasing green-up, or just trying to figure out why your lawn’s looking rough, I’m here to help.

Let’s rescue your yard together.

Por mis amigos in Mexico:

Estoy notando manchas secas y poco pasto

Si no aparecen insectos:

Daily watering? Skip it. Try this instead.
Most lawns only need 2–3 deep soakings per week. During hot spells, add a short cool-down cycle during the day to help your lawn beat the heat. This approach encourages deeper roots, healthier turf, and less water waste.

How to set up a soak cycle:
If you notice puddling or runoff during irrigation—especially on clay soils or sloped lawns—you’re likely watering faster than your soil can absorb.

Here’s how to fix it:

Run your sprinkler and time how long it takes before puddling starts.

Use that as your maximum runtime per cycle.

Split your total watering time into 2–3 shorter cycles, with 30–60 minute soak breaks between each to allow the water to absorb.

Example schedules:

Zone 1 (15-minute total runtime, puddling starts at 5 minutes):
5 min water → 30 min soak → 5 min water → 30 min soak → 5 min water

Zone 2 (30-minute total runtime, puddling starts at 10 minutes):
10 min water → 60 min soak → 10 min water → 60 min soak → 10 min water

Cool-down cycles are different. These are quick midday mists—not meant to soak the soil, but to cool the leaf surface during peak heat.

Not sure how long to run your system? Reach out to your local extension office or a certified irrigation pro for help dialing it in.
