⚑ Madras has seen more than its share of power outages lately.

If you've been thinking about backup power, here's a quick breakdown of your main options, because not every generator is the right fit for every home.

πŸ”Œ Portable generators
Gas-powered and easy to store. Great for short outages and flexibility. With an interlock kit installed, they can safely power your whole home through your existing panel.

🏠 Standby generators
Permanently installed and wired to your home. Detects an outage and starts automatically, usually within seconds. Runs on propane or natural gas, so no hauling fuel.

β˜€οΈ Hybrid solar and battery backup
Silent, no fuel required. Pairs with solar panels or works as a standalone battery system. With Central Oregon's sunshine, this can be a long-term power solution, not just an emergency one.

The right choice depends on your home size, how often you lose power, and what you need to keep running. Have questions? Let us know, we are happy to help point you in the right direction.

⚑ Thinking about getting an EV charger at home?

Before you buy one, here's what most people don't know:

Your panel might not be ready for it.

A Level 2 home charger (the kind that actually charges your car overnight) typically needs a dedicated 240V, 50-amp circuit. If your panel is already maxed out, undersized, or older β€” that's a problem before we even start.

Here's what we look at before any EV charger install:
βœ… Panel capacity β€” do you have room to add a 50-amp breaker?
βœ… Panel age & condition β€” some older panels aren't safe to add to
βœ… Location β€” how far is the panel from where you want to charge?
βœ… Permit requirements β€” yes, this requires a permit in most areas

The charger itself is the easy part. The electrical work behind it is where it matters.

If you're planning on going electric, give us a call before you buy anything β€” we'll tell you exactly what you're working with.

πŸ”΄ Go look at your electrical panel right now.

Find the brand name, it's printed inside the door or on the breakers.

If it says Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or GTE-Sylvania, or if you have an old fuse box, you need to know that these panels have a documented history of failure.

Not to scare you. Just so you're not the last to find out.

⚑ QUICK CHECK: LOOSE PLUGS

Plug something into your outlet and give it a slight wiggle.

πŸ‘‰ Does it:
β€’ Slide out easily?
β€’ Feel loose or not stay snug?
β€’ Fall out on its own?
That’s a worn-out outletβ€”and it’s more than just annoying.

Loose outlets can:
β€’ Cause overheating
β€’ Lead to arcing (small electrical sparks)
β€’ Damage your devices

🚨 If a plug won’t stay secure, it’s time to replace the outlet.
This is a quick fix that can prevent bigger electrical issues down the road.

⚑ A power strip is not surge protection.

Most people think they're covered. They're not.

A standard power strip will stop an overload, but it does nothing to stop a voltage spike from a lightning strike or utility surge from frying your TV, computer, or refrigerator.

There are two levels of real protection:
πŸ”Œ Point-of-use surge protectors β€” plugs into your outlet, protects the devices connected to it. Look for a joule rating of 1,000 or higher.

🏠 Whole-home surge protector β€” installed at your panel, protects everything in the house at once. This is the one most people don't know exists.
Ideally, you want both.

A whole-home unit is one of the most affordable things we install β€” and one of the most overlooked.

πŸ‘€ Quick Visual Check for Homeowners

Take a look at the outlets in your bathroom and kitchen today.
Ask yourself:
βœ”οΈ Are they cracked, loose, or discolored?
βœ”οΈ Do plugs fall out easily?
βœ”οΈ Are they located near sinks or water sources?
βœ”οΈ Do they have TEST and RESET buttons (GFCI protection)?

Bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor areas should have GFCI protection to help reduce shock risk around water. If something looks off, it may be time for an upgrade or repair.

Cove Electric is always happy to help keep your home safe and up to date. ⚑
