From the Ring to the Capitol

Sometimes the impact of an ag kid reaches far beyond the show ring.

What starts with early mornings, feeding chores, fitting an animal, learning responsibility, and standing in front of a judge can grow into something much bigger. These young men and women are learning lessons about work ethic, accountability, leadership, perseverance, and advocacy—lessons that can follow them all the way to the halls of the Capitol.

And every now and then, the roles are reversed… the kids become the teachers! At Oklahoma Youth Expo’s Legislative Showmanship, 4-H and FFA members have the opportunity to coach legislators on how to properly show an animal.

Who would have thought that some of the kids who once stood in a show ring would one day have a voice in shaping the future of agriculture and our communities? 🌾

Look at this little cutie and that proud smile! 🥰

There’s something special about a first time in the show ring—the excitement, the nerves, the hard work, and that little moment when a young showman realizes, “I’m really doing this!”

This takes us back to a bright day, when a kid, a pig, and a whole lot of determination made memories that would last a lifetime. 🐷🏆

Every seasoned showman started somewhere… and sometimes, it started with a little pig and a big dream. ❤️

🥩 90-Day Beef Stocker/Feeder Contest Update! 🐂

Yesterday was a great day as we kicked off our 90-Day Beef Stocker/Feeder Contest with a total of 8 exhibitors signed up to participate! We have 4 pens of heifers and 4 pens of steers ready to go!

These exhibitors will gain valuable real-world experience as they learn what it takes to manage a beef project in today’s cattle industry. They’ll have to consider factors such as feed rations, feed costs, beef checkoff dollars, interest rates, and other real-world expenses that impact profitability.

The exhibitors will return in January for their final weigh-in, interviews, and other contest activities to see how their projects have performed and what they’ve learned along the way.

🏆 And don’t forget — the winners of this contest will also qualify for the Bonus Auction in the Spring!

We’re excited to see these kids learn, grow, and put their knowledge into action while gaining hands-on experience with the business side of the beef industry!

Good luck to all 8 exhibitors! We can’t wait to see how these projects turn out! 👏🐮

Setting up the final pieces to start the beef stocker contest. Kids will be doing initial weigh in at 2pm if anyone wants to come down to the RMC Ag Pavillion to see the cattle. These animals and kids will be back in 90 days to finish out the contest.

Pictures are more than just a moment frozen in time—they carry an entire lifetime of memories.

This photo, taken around 1986 or 1987, brings us back to the fair, where kids worked hard, families cheered them on, and memories were made that would last long after the ribbons were handed out.

Here we have a little girl with her Dad and her steer, Lil Ox. 🐂❤️ Years have passed, but this sweet moment—and the memories that came with it—are still here.

Now for the fun part… Can anyone name the Dad or the little girl? 👀

Here’s a clue: She still lives right here in Roger Mills County!

We have so enjoyed all the memories you all have been sending the fair board! Please continue to send them!

Looking back at the Spring Livestock Bonus Auction reminds us once again how special our community is. The support shown to these kids goes far beyond the moment. Sometimes that is an investment in a future Roger Mills County Farmer, Rancher, Husband and Dad. These moments go far beyond the auction an invest in a future of hard work, dedication and family.

When we come together, we give our youth more than a memory; it's an opportunity, we give them confidence, encouragement and those attributes last a lifetime.

Let's keep our in the 90's.

Some fair memories stay with us for a lifetime-sometimes even after the people who made those memories with us are gone. A photo, a familiar face, or a simple tradition can bring those moments rushing back and remind us just how special they were.

Today, we also want to recognize and thank the long time supporters and volunteers who have helped make these memories possible year after year. Your dedication has become part of the community's story and in turn a part of so many families' memories.
