On this day 188 years ago, the Philadelphia Association of Journeymen House Carpenters organized a national convention of carpenters to fight for the 10-hour workday. That was on October 24, 1836, and less than four years later, on March 31, 1840, President Van Buren did exactly that and enacted a 10-hour workday.

Then and now, the lesson is clear: When carpenters organize, educate, and agitate, we win. ✊
