tarted the heating season. We’ve been getting a lot of service calls. Talking with clients over the phone helps a lot—it often reveals the problems early, so we can be well prepared before visiting the site.

A recent phone conversation with a customer about his furnace problem helped him identify a failed control board. The client happened to be an electrician and had a meter to measure voltage and resistance. As a result, I ordered a new board for him, and he installed it himself.

If you’re handy and have a screwdriver and an electrical meter, you can save hundreds of dollars on simple repairs. Of course, if you’re an advanced handyman, we can support you with more complex tasks, such as replacing a blower motor, cleaning a secondary heat exchanger on a high-efficiency furnace, or diagnosing issues with a hydronic boiler.

In any case, you’ll know what the problem is, and when your local HVAC technician arrives, you’ll be able to communicate with him like a pro. Our consultation rate is $60, payable only if the consultation leads to a successful result. If you need more than one hour, the rate is $60 per hour, billed in 15-minute increments. We always strive to save you money.

In most cases, the capacity of commercial air-conditioning systems declines over time due to deteriorated condenser coils. Replacing old 10-, 20-, or larger-ton units can be very costly. A dirty coil forces an air-conditioning system to work much harder under significantly elevated refrigerant pressure. As a result, the compressor may fail, or a technician might mistakenly conclude that the system is overcharged when the condenser coil is dirty, or undercharged when the evaporator coil is dirty. The situation worsens if the blower wheel accumulates dust or the secondary heat exchanger becomes blocked—both of which can lead to costly repairs.

To prevent such problems, don’t neglect seasonal maintenance of your air-conditioning and heating systems, and replace the air filter regularly once it becomes gray.
