From blue underlayment to a finished solar roof. Clean ridge lines, and a solar array built right into the shingles. No panels bolted on top, no lag bolts piercing your roof, just a roof that powers your home.

We built the home, and the roofing was handled by Modern Day Roofing, who installed the GAF Energy Solar Roof system. Solar built right into the shingle with high-performance cells that turn sunlight straight into power for the house, connectors concealed but easy to reach if anything ever needs checking, and a lag bolt-free system so going solar doesn't mean poking holes in the roof you just paid for.

Real numbers: a 22 kW system producing an estimated 23,716 kWh in year one, serious production, not a token panel or two. Our thinking is simple: a roof should protect your home and work for you for decades, going solar shouldn't mean trading waterproofing for panels, and this system lets you have both and looks clean doing it.

To most, this looks unfinished. For us, it's the most important stage of the entire build.

The bones of this home are exposed for anyone to see. The rain screen, the spray foam insulation, and that hand-set tongue and groove porch ceiling our crew installed board by board.

Take the rain screen. It creates a small gap built between the house wrap (in our case zip board) and the siding, and it does one job extremely well. Rain Screen lets any moisture that gets in dry out, instead of trapping it against the structure. Skip that gap, and you're not just risking mold down the line, you're risking a home that never fully seals, leaving you with drafts no matter how hard your HVAC works to keep up.

The spray foam plays a similar role, sealing every gap in the framing so conditioned air stays inside instead of leaking out.

That porch ceiling deserves its own callout. Tongue and groove boards lock together edge to edge, so once they're up, they stay up, no warping, no gaps, no shifting over time.

These are the details most buyers won't think to ask about, but they're exactly what determines whether a home stays tight, dry, and comfortable a decade or two down the road.

Save this post if you're planning your own build. It's worth knowing what to look for before the walls go up.

This weekend, our crew traded blueprints for birdhouses.

We were proud to be a part of this year's Touch a Truck event, hosted annually by the New River Valley Home Builders Association . This community favorite gives kids the chance to explore all kinds of large vehicles and equipment across different trade careers.

For the second year in a row, we partnered with Modern Day Roofing to give kids a hands-on building experience. Together, we set up a station where children could build their own birdhouse from start to finish, then shingle the roof themselves with the Modern Day Roofing team. Watching kids take real pride in something they built with their own hands is one of our favorite parts.

This year, we also hosted a food drive alongside Feeding Southwest Virginia. Every donation collected stayed local, going directly to families right here in the New River Valley.

We are grateful for a community that continues to show up for events like this one, and even more grateful for the chance to give back in a way that goes beyond the job site.

If your child built a birdhouse with us this weekend, we would love to see how it turned out. Drop a photo or let us know in the comments how it went.

If you have little ones who love anything with large trucks and hands-on activities, come out and see us this Saturday, August 15th.

Setter construction will be collecting food donations at the entrance, 3 cans/boxes will cover one ticket.
All food will be donated back to the NRV community in hopes to support the families around us.

We can't wait to see you all there!

Making huge strides over here the past couple of weeks.

The front porch bump-out is fully timber-framed, one of the side porch hip roofs is locked in, and the back porch ceiling is done!

On top of all the porch progress, we hit a massive milestone for the build: All windows have been set and installed throughout, bringing the build to a whole other level when you step inside.

For the back porch, we took an extra step with the design: we installed the tongue & groove right on top of the timber framing. The reason? When you're sitting out back looking up, you see smooth, continuous wood with zero nail holes or hardware showing through. Just clean, beautiful timber work.

Progress is moving fast on our latest custom build! We’ve officially hit one of our favorite milestones: windows and doors are going in.

There’s nothing quite like seeing a structure go from a framed shell to a fully enclosed home, especially when those massive gabled windows start framing the landscape perfectly.

Some homes are designed to stand out. Others are designed to belong. A year ago we got the pleasure of wrapping up this beautiful 3,000sqft home.

This custom log cabin, completed last June, sits quietly in the woods with warm natural materials, floor-to-ceiling built-ins, glass railings, and a wrap-around deck that brings the outside in from every angle.

It’s a build that’s less about making a statement and more about getting the details right.
