We partnered with Redi-Rock K.I.T. and Central Bridge Company, LLC to design this retaining wall to support the extension of a pedestrian trail along Newtown Pike (KY 922) in Lexington, Kentucky.

Reaching a maximum height of 20 feet, this retaining wall was situated in a partial rock cut in close proximity to the property line behind it requiring very limited excavation.

The design was optimized using Redi-Rock XL retaining wall units to deliver a gravity solution that did not require geogrid reinforcement or other external anchors. The final design kept the the limits of the entire wall construction within the state's right-of-way.

As part of Bellefonte’s long-term flood plan, our team designed eight retaining walls to help lift a riverfront property out of the flood zone while creating a more functional public space for the community.

▪️Max wall height of 12-ft to mitigate flood elevation
▪️Alcoves along the wall to create seating areas with benches
▪️A water-access ramp for canoes, kayaks, and fishing

12 years ago, this intersection needed major safety and utility upgrades, but space was tight.

Our Redi-Rock design minimized right-of-way impacts with 8 gravity walls (11,250 ft²). The space-efficient wall layout helped Hamilton County widen the intersecting roads to serve the rapidly growing community. Today, this engineered solution still helps preserve roadway safety standards as traffic volume continues to rise.

Smart engineering doesn’t just solve today’s problems; it helps prevent tomorrow’s.

Using geogrid reinforcement and vertical slip joints, our design team delivered an engineering solution for a 32-foot-tall Redi-Rock wall system over a concrete box bridge.

While standard practice, the application of vertical slip joints mitigates the effects of differential settlement between the wall and bridge components.

It’s Thursday and we’re feeling a Throwback!

Ten years ago, we partnered with Precast on a Redi-Rock project for the Cobb County Department of Transportation in Marietta, GA.

We replaced the original cast-in-place concept with a redesign that hit 15-foot heights without external reinforcement and stayed within the construction limits. The delivery of our value-engineering alternative cut costs, reduced complexity, and ultimately won approval.

Designing retaining walls is never as simple as stacking blocks.

The cross-section shows the hidden complexity behind a large precast concrete block wall when holding back an unstable slope.

Geotechnical borings revealed competent bedrock below the slope, with colluvial soils sitting just above it. These soils are prone to sliding, so to mitigate that risk our team used benched shot rock fill to steepen the crest slope to the desired grade. With the wall embedded in the deeper competent bedrock, the entire wall/slope solution provided the necessary buttress to stabilize the entire hillside.

When space is tight and the budget is tighter, smart design solutions are crucial.

Initially designed as cast-in-place, our team engineered an alternative Redi-Rock radius wall to support the limestone cut behind a hotel. The 12.5-foot-tall gravity design resulted in a more cost-effective solution with a faster installation.
