How do you replace a seawall when equipment can’t reach the shoreline?

On the Intermediate River in Bellaire, Michigan, we’re replacing 150 feet of failing wood seawall with fieldstone shore protection. A steep hill means removing debris by hand and with a cable system, sending stone down a chute, and moving it into place with wheelbarrows.

It’s a good example of why shoreline access matters when planning a project, and how much work happens before you see the finished result.

Our crew has worked incredibly hard on this one, and we’re proud of their progress.

Every shoreline gives us different conditions to work with.

On this project, we’re able to use a water pump and jetting wand to help set the support posts for the new seawall. Ground conditions don’t always allow this method, so our crew adjusts the approach to fit the site.

This is one of the first steps in building the structure that will support the finished wall.

Progress at Indian River Beach Club.

Most of the tear-out is complete, and we’re finishing up the posts for the new seawall. Next comes the framing and tie-back system, followed by vinyl sheet piling, backfill, and a wood boardwalk on top.

There’s a lot that goes into a seawall before you see the finished shoreline. Here’s a look at where this project stands and what’s coming next.

Follow along as the work continues.

The farther we got into this Secord Lake project, the tougher the access became.

This section sits at the very end of the canal and wraps tightly around the house. Once our equipment could no longer reach the work area, much of the seawall had to be built by hand.

Our crew also worked around a tree that was important to the homeowner. Keeping it wasn’t just about preserving something meaningful to the customer, it was also about reducing unnecessary impact on the surrounding environment and protecting the tree’s root system.

A closer look at one of our projects on Secord Lake in Gladwin, Michigan.

This property needed a combination of fieldstone shore protection and a new wood seawall after the existing wall, deck, and boardwalk had reached the end of their life.

With the lake level currently down, our crew has been able to get in and rebuild the shoreline so it’s ready for the future.
