In the Paris suburb of Rambouillet, an extraordinary lighting experiment is glowing to life — literally! 🇫🇷🌱 French startup Glowee has developed bioluminescent streetlights powered by marine bacteria (Aliivibrio fischeri) that naturally emit a soft blue-green light. These bacteria are housed in glass tubes filled with seawater and nutrients. When oxygen is added, they glow — no wires, no electricity, just living light.
Though still experimental and not as bright as standard LEDs (only ~15–20 lumens/m²), the system is quiet, carbon-free, low-maintenance, and produces minimal light pollution — ideal for parks and eco-sensitive areas. 🌍✨ However, the project faces challenges, and as of 2023, Glowee has reportedly filed for bankruptcy, casting uncertainty on its future.
