Time for Summer Home Improvements

With summer comes sunshine and warm days, perfect for outside and in home improvement projects! Here are a few ideas for improving your home this summer.

1. Skylights: Allow plenty of sunshine to provide warmth and brightness to your home, adding a skylight is the perfect in-home improvement project for summer. There are a variety of skylights to choose from.

2. Home siding: It is usually necessary to repaint your home every four to five years, installing siding will save you time and money because you’ll never have to paint again! Siding is also a beautiful way to increase the resale value of your house.

3. Patio or Deck: They can be used as a place to read, relax and entertain family & friends. You can also choose a covered design to protect you from the elements and outdoor pests.

4. Gazebo: Giving the yard a roofed deck or a detached porch, a gazebo of the right size can make a lovely reading room, an extended gardening area or a nice shaded spot to take shelter with a drink during summer parties.

With summer quickly approaching, home improvements are surely on your mind. Give NWCC a call 208.660.9866

After a long, dark winter, spring's bright sun and warm winds are, well, a breath of fresh air. The only downside? All that sunshine spotlights your leaf-filled gutters, cracked sidewalks and the dead plants in last year's flower beds.

Check for loose or leaky gutters. Improper drainage can lead to water in the basement or crawl space. Make sure downspouts drain away from the foundation and are clear and free of debris.

Low areas in the yard or next to the foundation should be filled with compacted soil. Spring rains can cause yard flooding, which can lead to foundation flooding and damage. Also, when water pools in these low areas in summer, it creates a breeding ground for insects.

Use a screwdriver to probe the wood trim around windows, doors, railings and decks. Make repairs now before the spring rains do more damage to the exposed wood.

From the ground, examine roof shingles to see if any were lost or damaged during winter. If your home has an older roof covering, you may want to start a budget for replacement. The summer sun can really damage roof shingles. Shingles that are cracked, buckled or loose or are missing granules need to be replaced. Flashing around plumbing vents, skylights and chimneys need to be checked and repaired by a qualified roofer.

Inspect concrete slabs for signs of cracks or movement. All exterior slabs except pool decks should drain away from the home's foundation. Fill cracks with a concrete crack filler or silicone caulk. When weather permits, power-wash and then seal the concrete.

Remove firewood stored near the home. Firewood should be stored at least 18 inches off the ground at least 2 feet from the structure.

Check outside hose faucets for freeze damage. Turn the water on and place your thumb or finger over the opening. If you can stop the flow of water, it is likely the pipe inside the home is damaged and will need to be replaced.

Have a qualified heating and cooling contractor clean and service the outside unit of the air conditioning system. Clean coils operate more efficiently, and an annual service call will keep the system working at peak performance levels. Change interior filters on a regular basis.

How hard can it be? is the first question a daring do-it-yourselfer may ask when approaching a perceivably easy home repair.

When it comes to home improvement, you likely have grand ideas, but a very small budget. Often when you do the work yourself, you can drop the cost by half just by eliminating the labor expense. However, should you do the home improvement work yourself? There are many factors that go into determining whether you should do the work yourself.

Unless you have the necessary skills, you should avoid dangerous jobs, jobs that are difficult or those that have costly mistakes. There are certain home improvement jobs where the risk is simply not worth it. The following are some jobs that you should hire a processional to do:

- Electrical work
- Plumbing Repairs
- Roofing Repairs
- Concrete flooring
- Siding over two stories
- Asbestos Removal
- Gas Appliance Repairs

Whether you should do the project yourself you should consider your skills, tools and time. Consider each of these areas before making the final decision.

First, you need to be realistic about your skills. Don't try to take on a job that you won't be able to finish or something that will look unprofessional.

Second, do you have the tools necessary to complete the job? While you can rent or buy tools to save on labor costs, you need to make sure you have the experience to use them. Again you need to think twice about doing the job yourself if you don't have the proper experience with necessary tools.

Third, always consider time constraints. Even your spare time has value and you need to take this into consideration.

To make sure you are prepared you should consider all your alternatives. Consider the benefits of hiring Northwest Custom Construction to do the job. By doing this you can successfully determine whether doing the work yourself is the better choice.
