You may notice that the Camponotus modoc, or western carpenter ant, species is in swarming right now. It is important to note that the queen reproductives that are being seen usually can’t nest into sound wood. They generally are looking for areas like soft stumps or soft debris mounds around trees to nest. If you see them unwinged, please note that you can see the wounds from where the wings were; usually best with a magnifying glass. The swarming period usually lasts a week or so. Seeing the major and minor workers, smaller in relative size to the reproductives, would likely indicate a nest nearby.

I’m pretty sure this is the biggest mouse I’ve seen in a long while. Fourteen inches long; I thought it was a rat at first glance! It barely fit into the bait box where I found it! Already finding wasps, yellowjackets, mice, and carpenter ants! Ready!!!
