Hope that everyone is staying safe and warm in this cold weather! Yesterday I spent a solid 40 minutes on the phone with a customer who was having trouble with his heat.

Long story short his unit just needed to be reset at the breakers in the panel box. I was able to talk him through it on the phone and his unit came back on and started working like normal.

In extreme cold your heat pump may malfunction and shut itself down due to the outdoor sensor reading (if it has one) or from power surges. We certainly have had a lot of power surges so that was my first thought.

If you have power surges/ failures or unexpected problems in extreme cold it never hurts to cycle the power at the main breakers. Just turn everything off for a few minutes then turn it back on. If things don’t come back on like normal then it’s time to call a pro.

Found this the other day on a Rheem heat pump. TXV tubing rubbed together from vibration and put a pin hole in the copper.

The result was all the Freon leaking out of the unit. Put a new one on it and cleaned the outdoor coil too. This unit is located right next to a dryer vent so it is exposed to a lot of dust.

This one is fixed but now I am now checking every new unit we put in to make sure these lines aren’t touching each other from the factory!

Mini split not heating:

Got a call the other day from someone who put a mini split in and then paid an HVAC contractor to check it out, leak test, pull vacuum and put it into operation.

When I went to look at it I put my gauges on it and the system literally had no Freon in it!

Why? Bad flares on the line sets.

How did it happen? Customer used the wrong type of flaring tool.

Needless to say it is fixed and running like a top now.

Takeaway: Save yourself some money, frustration, and a whole lot of time and call a pro to install your system or commission it properly.

Hey guys here are a few pics of a full system changeout we just finished today for one of our new customers. Removed an old oil burning furnace and air conditioner and replaced it with a modern heat pump system.

The return had to be upsized and the original system was installed without a drain pan and no cutoff switches to turn the unit off if the drain ever gets clogged up. These components were added with the new equipment to protect the home from accidental water damage.

Here’s a fun fact for anybody considering a heat pump. It’s not just about the S.E.E.R rating. If you didn’t know S.E.E.R stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio.

So here’s what’s interesting that rating only applies to the systems performance in the summer while it is in air conditioning mode. If you are putting in a new system the higher the S.E.E.R rating the lower the cost to operate the unit. Of course the higher the energy savings the more expensive the unit.

Now here is where things get even more interesting. Okay you bought that new heat pump and think it’s going to save you money in the winter time too. Well maybe and then again maybe not. Did your contractor discuss H.S.P.F.? This stands for Heating Seasonal Performance Factor and is a very good predictor of how well your equipment will actually work in the cold weather. In general it is best to look for a H.S.P.F. rating of at least 8 to 10. Just like with S.E.E.R. Ratings the higher the number the better the performance.

If energy saving is on your mind there are several things that play very important roles. Some of them the average homeowner has direct control over like keeping the area around your outdoor unit free of grass clippings and debri. Your outdoor unit works kinda like a radiator and sucks air in and ejects it out of the top of the unit.

Cleaning the indoor and outdoor coil should be done annually. This a job best left to professionals as there are several other things that should be checked on your outdoor unit at least annually.

Be sure to change your indoor air filter every month to achieve the best energy savings. Think about it this way you have seen all those guys trying to squeeze every bit of horsepower out of there car. The first thing they do is get rid of the stock air box and put in a K and N air filter or something similar. Well your furnace or air handler also needs air to flow as easily as possible throughout your ductwork and it needs to be at the right static pressure too. If you want to use a pleated filter then consider upgrading to a 4” filter. They allow far more airflow and do a much better job of allowing the fan in the furnace to pull air in and push it through your ductwork. They also generally do not have to be replaced every month and filter the air far better than a 1” filter.

Filters have MERV ratings on them. In general the higher the rating the better the filtration. However, there is a trade off that higher rating is going to make your unit work harder costing you money now and in future repair bills due to the increased strain on the blower motor.

If you are building a house or replacing your system it is best to place the outdoor unit in a location where it is not in direct sun all day long if at all possible. It will not have to work as hard to cool the air inside the house.

Have your equipment checked by a professional annually to ensure the most economical operation especially the Freon charge. If the charge is off by just a few ounces then your system is going to work harder than necessary in air conditioning mode, and the heat mode if it is a heat pump.
