Associated Model Railroads of Columbia

Associated Model Railroads of Columbia AMROC is dedicated to the promotion and operation of Model Railroading. AMROC is dedicated to the preservation of the model railroading hobby.

We welcome people of all ages and origins to come to our club! We are a unique model railroad club that not only allows but encourages guests to bring their own model trains from home and run them on our layouts! We have N, HO, O, S, and G scale layouts. N Scale- Our 9’ x 12’ N scale layout is a model of typical Burlington-Northern circa 1970 near the Mississippi river. It includes a 8 track yard

, a coal loading operation on one side of the river and a power station on the other side. The rocky cliffs overlooking the river provide a good example of creating realistic rocks and rock faces on a model layout. It is controlled by a Digitrax DCC system allowing use of Digitrax throttles or WiFi control via app. HO Scale- Our 12’ x 50’ HO layout, has been very much under construction, but is looking very good now. It will provide a pike for both public running and realistic railroad operations. It will include the typical point to point operations, where trains can be built taken to distant cities and broken down to be delivered to customers. The nearly complete logging operation features a 3’ scratch built trestle and will soon include a working log mill. During shows and on running nights, we can up to 8 trains at once for a very busy scene. We also have the ability to run analog on this layout, so DCC isn’t a requirement. O and S Scale- Our 10’ X 18’ O,S scale plus the 3’ x 15’ yard is always a highlight allowing as many as 5 trains zipping by at once. It includes some of Lionel’s operating accessories, which can be run by visitors from buttons beside the layout. The kit built 4’ through girder bridge and some interesting graffiti provide some of the highlights. The layout is controlled conventionally or by Lionel’s Legacy/TMCC control system if your engine is equipped. G scale is a suspended layout, controlled conventionally, with over 100’ of track!

Charleston friends — we need your help finding our next station. 🚂

After 16 wonderful years at Citadel Mall, the Charleston Area Model Railroad Club has been informed that our time in this space will soon come to an end.

🚂 Our final public days at the mall will be April 11–12 and April 14, when the last trains will roll through the layout in its current home and this chapter of our railroad slowly pulls into the station.

While this chapter is closing, the Charleston Area Model Railroad Club is not reaching the end of the line. Our members are actively working to secure a new location so we can keep the trains running and continue sharing the hobby with the community.

A Little About Our Railroad

The Charleston Area Model Railroad Club has been part of the Lowcountry community since 1983.

What began as a small group of train enthusiasts grew into a place where creativity, craftsmanship, and a shared love of railroading could be enjoyed by generations of visitors.

Since 2008, our home at Citadel Mall has welcomed families, hobbyists, and curious guests to experience the magic of model trains. Every mountain, building, and mile of track on the layout was built by our members with care and dedication.

Over the years, thousands of visitors have walked through our doors to watch the trains roll by and experience the joy of model railroading.

Before this train leaves the station, we invite everyone to come visit the layout one last time and help us celebrate the memories built here.

It's been a busy week at AMROC and there are so many people to thank, but I wanted to give a shout-out to Chris at ChrisPyEats for preparing our Christmas meeting dinner. It was delicious and all gone by the end of the night. https://chrispyeats.com/
