In 1894, the city of Corsicana, Texas was drilling for water. What they found instead was the first major commercial oil deposit in Texas history, and nobody initially knew what to do with it. 🛢️😮
The Corsicana discovery was genuinely accidental. The city had contracted with a drilling company to sink water wells to supplement the municipal water supply, and when the drill hit oil rather than the expected water-bearing formation, the initial reaction was closer to disappointment than excitement. Oil in a water well was a contamination problem, not an opportunity, at least until someone with petroleum industry experience recognized what the flow characteristics suggested about the depth and pressure of the formation below.
Within a few years of the discovery, Corsicana had attracted enough oil industry investment to establish Texas's first oil refinery, built by Joseph Cullinan, who would later found the Texas Company that became Texaco. The techniques and infrastructure developed in the Corsicana field provided the operational foundation that made the much larger Spindletop discovery of 1901 commercially exploitable so quickly. Without Corsicana, the story of Texas oil runs differently, and the story of the 20th century runs differently with it.
