The Cuttyhunk Island Artists’ Residency is glad to welcome as the Workshop Leader for CIAR’s Plein Air Oil Painting Workshop, Sept 18-22, 2026. The workshop is open to oil painters of all levels, from beginning to experienced. Applications are due May 15th!

Marc Dalessio is an American and French naturalistic painter. Born in Los Angeles and raised in part in the Fiji Islands, he studied biology and fine art at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he was introduced to landscape painting and academic drawing. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1992, Dalessio moved to Florence to train at the Charles H. Cecil Studios, a traditional atelier rooted in the academic methods of the École des Beaux-Arts. Dalessio currently lives and works in the Gers region of France with his wife, Tina, who is also an artist.

• Artists’ Residency (Sept 9–16) with visiting artists and
Open to career-driven visual artists working across media. Full and partial Fellowships are available for the this session.

• Plein Air Oil Painting Workshop (Sept 18–22) taught by
Open to oil painters of all levels, including beginners.

The Cuttyhunk Island Artists’ Residency is glad to welcome Claudia Keep as one of our Visiting Artists for CIAR’s Fall Residency. Applications are due May 15th!

Claudia Keep is a painter whose work focuses on intimate scenes drawn from everyday life and observation. Born in Low Moor, Virginia, she received her BFA from Bryn Mawr College. Her recent solo exhibitions include Somehow, Somewhere, Someway at Galerie Marguo (Paris), In Bed at 12.26 (Dallas), Almanac at Parker Gallery (Los Angeles), and Aubade and New York at MARCH (New York), among others. She has exhibited widely in the US and abroad.

CIAR’s Fall Residency is September 9–16, 2026, open to visual artists working across media. Randall Exon will join Claudia Keep as Visiting Artist, and both will give an artist talk open to the public. Several fellowships are available, covering up to the full cost of attending.

The Cuttyhunk Island Artists’ Residency is glad to welcome Randall Exon as one of our Visiting Artists for CIAR’s 2026 Fall Residency. Applications are due May 15th!

Randall Exon is a representational painter whose work focuses on landscapes and figures, often drawn from memory and observation. Born in South Dakota and raised across the Midwest, he earned his BFA from Washburn University and MFA from the University of Iowa. Exon has taught painting at Swarthmore College since 1982, where he is the Sara Lawrence Lightfoot Professor of Art. His work - often inspired by Pennsylvania, the Midwest, and the coast of County Mayo, Ireland - has been exhibited widely in the U.S. and U.K. He is represented by Hirschl & Adler Modern in New York.

CIAR’s Fall Residency is September 9–16, 2026, open to visual artists working across media. Claudia Keep will join Randall Exon as Visiting Artist, and both will give an artist talk open to the public. Several fellowships are available, covering up to the full cost of attending.

CIAR is glad to be able to offer fellowships to cover and offset the cost of attending our Fall 2026 Artist Residency. Please share widely!

** The Open Merit Fellowship ** is given to an artist based on artistic merit and covers up to the full residency cost.

** The Environmental Artist Fellowship (new this year) ** is given to an artist whose practice focuses on nature, ecology, or the outdoors and covers up to the full residency cost.

** The Paul Cuffe Fellowship** named for Cuttyhunk’s historic resident, is dedicated to an artist of color and covers up to the full residency cost.

** The Wellspring Fellowship ** is given to an artist who is also a parent with a child under the age of 18 yrs and covers up to the full residency cost.

** Partial / Work-Study Fellowships ** offer reduced residency cost in exchange for working up to one hour each day with our wonderful kitchen crew (usually washing pots). Amount of award will depend on the number of recipients.

This year’s residency occurs September 9 – 16. We’re excited to welcome Visiting Artists and  , who will join the residency and each give a public talk.

Applications are open for CIAR’s Plein Air Oil Painting Workshop with Marc Dalessio: September 18–22. Join us on beautiful Cuttyhunk Island for an opportunity to paint directly from the island’s sweeping coastal landscape. Designed for oil painters of all levels, beginners included, the workshop offers up to six hours of instruction each day.

Participants stay at the historic Avalon Inn, sharing meals prepared by the workshop’s Visiting Chef, Julie Carrion. The week also includes special gatherings, including a tasting of fresh Cuttyhunk oysters and an evening of live music.

A rare opportunity to study, paint, and connect in an unforgettable island setting.

Applications are open for CIAR’s Fall Artists’ Residency: September 9–16. We’re excited to welcome visiting artists Claudia Keep and Randall Exon, who will join the residency and each give a public talk. Fellowships are available, covering up to the full cost of attending.

Spend a week on remote Cuttyhunk Island making work, sharing meals prepared by our residency chef team, and settling into a slower rhythm alongside a small group of artists.
