"Expansive Clay"...not to be confused with "Expensive Clay", aka "Porcelain".

Expansive Clay is what the majority of the DFW metroplex is sitting on. Expansive clay is a clay soil that is prone to large volume changes (swelling and shrinking) that are directly related to changes in water content. Soils with a high content of expansive minerals can form deep cracks in drier seasons or years. They leave voids beneath your concrete driveways, walkways and around patios and pool decks.

For those of us who have experienced settling of these areas over the past few months only to have them return to a somewhat normal position, you have just experienced the effects of "Expansive Clay".
