This tree is an example of being over pruned. Once a tree has had a large amount of the canopy stripped it becomes costly to rehabilitate it with restoration pruning.

Since the exact cause of high temperature limb loss is unknown, there is no guaranteed way to prevent it. However, the healthier the tree is the better chance it has to recover and withstand stress.

If your soil looks like this and you are wondering why your tree looks like this….

Water your trees! (Who remembers what happened in 2011?!)

When conditions become severe, fine roots dehydrate, lose cellular function, and simply die.

The energy demand is too high so the roots lose ability to function.

This in turn provides less supply of water to leaves and specially further up into canopy. High temps directly injure leaves through intense sunlight and hot air moving across canopy.

This causes leaf scortch, browning, curling, and premature leaf drop.

Leaf drop is the final symptom of heat/drought stress as it’s the trees last reaction to conserving water within its own system as it is not available in the soil.

The heat will go away but doesn’t mean microbial activity returns to normal conditions immediately.

Helping Heat-Stressed Trees Recover

Consistent, deep watering is one of the most effective ways to help trees cope with heat and drought stress. By maintaining adequate soil moisture throughout the root zone and giving extra attention to trees showing visible signs of stress, homeowners can help support tree health during extended periods of hot, dry weather.

To support tree health during hot weather:

💚 Water deeply and consistently during extended dry periods

💚 Apply organic mulch to help retain soil moisture and moderate soil temperatures

💚Avoid excessive pruning during periods of extreme heat

💚Monitor trees for signs of insect activity or disease

💚Consult an ISA Certified Arborist® if symptoms worsen or persist

Don’t let one tree failure define all trees. Healthy, properly maintained trees provide numerous benefits to your home and neighborhood.

It’s been over 100° for over 24 days this summer.

This high heat in combination with the rocks at the base of this tree is adding additonal stress.

These rocks in direct sun light can get up to 150°. In addition to the heat the weight of the rocks compacts the soil and makes it harder for the roots to breath and uptake water and nutrients.

Each stress diminishes the health of the tree.

What can you do to improve your trees health?

💚 Use mulch properly around the base of the tree.

💦 Water properly, sprinklers aren’t enough. They are designed for grass and don’t pe*****te deep enough for tree roots

🪚 Prune dead wood, and don’t over trim.

🌳 Yearly assessments with a local certified arborist.
