Garden Tip: Due to repeated questions I've gotten in the past several days, it appears that there is an outbreak of army worms cranking up in parts of Texas. This is much earlier than I recall seeing – usually they don't show up until late August or September. They will usually be in bermuda, as in this photo posted by FB friend Shelly W. yesterday.

Here is our Game Plan: If you have a lawn, especially bermuda, that looks like this, look closely for the larvae. They should be plainly visible. You can confirm the problem better in person than I can do from a written description or from a photo.

Here is a link to a Texas A&M Fact Sheet on army worms. That's where I got the second photo showing the caterpillar. http://citybugs.tamu.edu/factsheets/landscape/lawns/ent-1007/

If you have a serious enough outbreak that you are seeing damage, treat with Bacillus thuringiensis, Spinosad or Sevin. The good news is that the lawn will bounce back. All the army worms consume is the grass blades. Apply an all-nitrogen lawn food with half or more of the nitrogen in slow release form and water the ground deeply.

(Note: If you have St. Augustine that has browned areas in hot, sunny locations, that is very likely due to chinch bugs. Again, I have to leave that confirmation to you. Look at the interface of the dead and healthy grass on a sunny afternoon. If you see BB-sized black insects with irregular white diamonds on their backs, those are the chinch bugs. Your local nursery will have products to eliminate them, but they will not be the same products as for the armyworms. If you need additional help, please access my "Notes" on this page from a desktop computer and see "St. Augustine Diagnostics." I have details there. Thanks.)
