Does your St. Augustine have Take All Root Rot after the rainy spring we had? Neil Sperry says the best way to cure TARR is to cover the lawn with compost before planting again. Thousands of Texas gardeners have had good results treating TARR by applying a 1-inch layer of Canadian sphagnum peat moss across the top of the grass in mid-April. You have to break up the clods of peat to get it to spread out uniformly, and then you'll want to water it in to settle it down onto the soil surface. If you had TARR, you'll see rapid improvement in the grass. No fungicides are effective on it.

It's time to plan your Summer Tree Pruning! Call now for a free estimate - 214-669-7767
To direct the growth by slowing the branches you don’t want; or to slow “dwarf” the development of a tree or branch, pruning should be done soon after seasonal growth is complete. The reason for the slowing effect is that you reduce the total leaf surface, thereby reducing the amount of food manufactured and sent to the roots. Another reason to prune in the summer is for corrective purposes. Defective limbs can be seen more easily, or limbs that hang down too far under the weight of the leaves.

After Fertilizing Your Lawn, When Is it Safe to Let Your Pets on the Lawn?
MowPros uses a granular type fertilizer which is on of tne easiest fertilizers to apply correctly and evenly. As you spread the tiny pellets, they are easily visible across the grass blades. A solid watering across the entire lawn forces the fertilizer down into the soil. You can let your pets back onto the lawn after 24 hours have elapsed from the last time you saw granules on the grass blades. A full day allows the fertilizer to soak deep into the soil and provides evaporation time for the water.

You should give the lawn its first feeding of fertilizer in the spring when the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees Fahrenheit. You'll know when the soil warms up to 55 because the lilacs begin to blossom and the grass starts growing. For most parts of the country, that means the first feeding should take place by about mid-April. Now's the time to get on the schedule! Call 214.669.7767.

The second feeding should happen about four weeks later, in early to mid-May. Then fertilize every six to eight weeks after that through October.

And remember that fall feeding is critical. Grass is still growing in the fall. The roots are going down and they need fertilizer. This is the most important application of the year.

We are currently scheduling for 2018 Fertilizer Program. Call us today at 214.669.7767 to learn more and to get on the schedule.

Standard practice is to apply a dose of lawn fertilizer in the spring, followed by one or two more during the growing season. If you follow this standard practice, though, the most common mistake is to apply the spring fertilizer application too early in spring. In reality, the best time for that first application is in late spring, just as the green grass is beginning to grow eagerly. In early spring, grasses are putting energy into root development, and applying fertilizer at this time will divert the plant's energy into leaf development too soon.

The number one cold weather tip is to cover your plants with a frost cloth. It lets the plant breathe, but also holds a lot of heat. If you can't find a frost cloth, a sheet or a blanket works well. Just make sure that it isn't just sitting on top of the plants, you want to wrap it around and below the plant so no wind enters.

#2, if there are potted plants you cannot move inside, then move potted plants to a spot where they're protected from the north wind.

#3, spread at least two to three inches of mulch to protect the roots of plants and trees. If the roots are protected then the roots can come back in the spring.

#4, use water on plants. It goes against common sense, but watering your plants actually protects them from the cold.

You should also avoid some common mistakes: Don't cover plants with plastic. Don't cut back dead-looking parts of plants after a cold spell. Don't put mulch too close to plants and trees. Don't wait until it's too cold to cover your plants.

Our recent freezing temperatures may have caused brown, crispy growth on plants that are susceptible to frost damage. Frost damage can occur when temperatures dip to or below the freezing point. And both cold-hardy plants and tenderer plants that do best in warmer temperatures can, depending on the circumstances, be affected by frost damage.
Growth damaged by frost can look ugly, and your first impulse may be to prune it — but don’t. Believe it or not, you can do more damage if you remove the damaged growth too soon. In fact, those ugly brown leaves actually help to protect the interior of the plant from future freezes.

If you have any questions about damaged plants in your yard, give us a call and we'll send a crew manager out to take a look and give some advice - 214.669.7767.

Pruning in winter—during the dormant season—invigorates many trees and shrubs because it leaves the plants with extra root and energy reserves that will support new growth on the remaining branches. Dormant-season pruning is good for you, too, because you can see the branches more clearly without leaves in the way, and it gives you a reason to go outside. But not every plant should be pruned in winter. Here's a list of those that should: Bradford and Callory pears, Crabapples, Poplar, Spruce, Junipers, Sumacs, Bald cypress, Cherries, Plums, Honey locust. Have you got a tree reading for pruning before the spring? Give us a call at 214-669-7767 to schedule an estimate.
