After a hurricane or flood, your septic system needs a different kind of attention than the rest of your house.
Before you flush, run the dishwasher, or start a load of laundry, a few things are worth checking:
• Standing water over the tank or drain field means the soil can't take more water right now
• Slow drains, gurgling, or sewage smells can point to a tank that's flooded or backing up
• Don't pump a flooded tank while the ground is still saturated, because it can shift or float
• Get a licensed pro to inspect it before you go back to normal use
