One of the biggest misconceptions about outdoor living projects is that everything has to be completed at once.

This backyard was built in phases, allowing the homeowners to enjoy each addition before moving on to the next. It started with a covered bluestone patio, outdoor fireplace, and gathering space. Later, we returned to install the connecting bluestone walkway, tying the entire landscape together. Then the homeowner realized they wanted a water feature, and we installed a beautiful fountain in our final visit.

A well-designed master plan gives you the flexibility to invest over time while ensuring every phase feels intentional—not like an afterthought.

Great outdoor spaces can evolve, and this project is proof.

Last night's storm was a reminder that water will always find a path.

That's why we're installing this drainage line alongside the home before the new backyard patio goes in. Heavy rains can quickly expose drainage issues, but planning for them during construction helps protect the patio, foundation, and surrounding landscape for years to come.

The biggest difference between a patio that lasts and one that develops problems often comes down to what you **can't** see when the project is finished.

After a storm like last night's, good drainage isn't an upgrade—it's a necessity.

One of the most common questions we get is: "How long do mortar joints last?"

The answer depends on the quality of the original installation, the type of mortar used, and the amount of exposure to moisture and weather. In many cases, mortar joints can last 20 to 30 years or longer before they begin to deteriorate.

When cracks, gaps, or loose mortar appear, repointing helps restore the structural integrity of the patio while preventing water from causing more extensive damage.

A little maintenance at the right time can add many more years to the life of a natural stone patio.

Every great restoration starts by removing what's failed.

Here, one of our team members is mechanically removing deteriorated mortar joints from an existing flagstone patio. It's a precise process that creates the clean, solid foundation needed for new mortar to properly bond and restore the patio's strength.

It's detailed work that takes patience and craftsmanship—but it's what helps preserve the beauty and longevity of natural stone for years to come.

The best restorations are built on the details.

The patio may be the feature everyone notices—but the drainage system underneath is what helps protect it for years to come.

Before any stone is installed, we're focused on managing water correctly. Proper drainage helps reduce standing water, minimize settling, and support the long-term performance of the entire outdoor space.

It's one of the most important parts of the project, even though it'll never be seen once the patio is complete.

That's the difference between building something that looks good today and something that continues to perform well for years to come.

One of our favorite calls to get is from a past client ready for their next project.

Last year, we had the opportunity to transform one part of this property. This year, they're trusting us again to bring the next phase of their outdoor vision to life.

We're excited to get started, and today marks the beginning with excavation and site preparation. Stay tuned as we take you through the process from the ground up.

Thank you to our returning clients for putting their trust in our team—it means more than you know.

Natural stone is built to last—but like anything exposed to the elements, it can benefit from maintenance over time.

This patio renovation included restoring worn areas, resetting stone where needed, and bringing new life back to an outdoor space with years of character. The goal isn't to erase its history—it's to preserve it for many more years to come.

A thoughtful renovation can completely transform the look and performance of an existing patio without starting from scratch.

When homeowners start planning an outdoor living space, it's easy to focus on the patio, fire pit, outdoor kitchen, or finished materials.

But before any of that happens, a thoughtful design can help ensure everything works together.

The best outdoor spaces don't happen by accident—they're planned with intention.

Most homeowners think about the finished patio.

We're thinking about where the water goes.

One of the first steps on this project is improving drainage along the side of the home. By removing the existing gravel and brick areas and addressing how surface water moves through the space, we can help protect both the new patio and the surrounding property.

Good drainage isn't the most exciting part of a project, but it's often one of the most important.

Because the best patios don't just look great—they manage water properly, too.

Today's office. 🪨🔨

Our team is on site repointing a flagstone installation, removing deteriorated mortar joints and replacing them with new mortar to help protect the stonework and extend its lifespan.

Repointing is one of those maintenance items that often goes unnoticed until it's needed, but it's an important part of preserving the appearance, safety, and integrity of natural stone surfaces.

Keeping quality masonry looking and performing its best.
