My grandmother used to say that the ugly fruit tastes the best. Most people scour the lot, looking for a piece free from bruises or blemishes...leaving the best for those of us in the know to enjoy.

If things had been different, Lovey might have been picked first. Her adorable ears, her sparkling eyes, would have been irresistible to anyone.

But as things are she came into the shelter emaciated, a constellation of scars scattered across her face, her tail deformed and immobilized. Was she attacked by another dog when she was a puppy? Was she hit by a car and her owners couldn't, or wouldn't, take her to the vet for help?

Lovey carries the map of her past on her body—a history of hardship written in scars. But if you look into her eyes, all you’ll see is love.

Whatever horrors this girl faced did nothing to dim her light. She'll trot confidently beside you, charming everyone she meets. She'll fetch a ball for as long as you've got energy to toss it. But Lovey's favorite place to be is in your lap as you stroke her silky soft fur, her head draped over your knee.

Day after day, she watches other dogs go home while she stays behind. Not because she isn't worthy—but because people can't see beyond what she's survived. Will you?

Dear (future) Forever Family,

I’ve been waiting my whole life to meet you. I didn’t know if I ever would.

For a long time, my world was small and scary. The noises, the cold shelter floors, the endless waiting—it all felt like too much. I curled up tight in the corner of my crate, hoping to disappear. No one noticed me. I wasn’t the dog who ran up wagging my tail or begging for cuddles. I was the dog who hid.

But then, someone saw me and didn't turn away.

The day my foster mom took me home, I was so scared. But she didn’t give up on me. She looked into my eyes like I mattered. And slowly, I started to believe her.

On day one, I couldn’t leave the corner of my crate. Now, I walk with my head held high, wagging my tail at strangers, hoping for a pat. Because I’ve learned that being close to people means love, not danger.

I wasn’t broken. I just needed someone to show me that the world could be kind.

And now I’m ready for you.

I dream of running in a yard, chasing another dog friend and maybe even a human kiddo or two. I dream of long walks, soft beds, and kisses on your face. I dream of belonging.

I don’t know how long you’ve been waiting for me, but I promise it will have been worth it. I will love you with EVERYTHING I have, every single day.
