Had a super fun time tabling at the Earth Day event! This is an annual event they put on to teach their employees about sustainability and to support local Denver businesses. I also enjoyed creating this pop up crevice garden and getting a free organic lunch. πŸ˜„

Picked up our Spring plant order from Little Valley, so excited! Lots of native and xeric species allocated for our Spring installations. Its been a great first week so far, we've already removed over 1000 sqft of non functional turf grass! Next week we will begin doing some planting.

A note about Denver Stage 1 drought watering restrictions. Although the watering limit is twice per week, if you are converting your landscape to xeric plants, you may apply for a permit to water your new plants extra for the first 3 weeks during establishment. To apply for permit, click on the link below and in the drop down menu select "Water Establishment Permit"

We squeezed in another project before the weather turned, this time installing a crevice garden and flagstone pathway! Grateful and honored to do this work at a Wild One's board member house.

Our client wanted to re-work their backyard so it looked more intentional, and also to have a prominent crevice garden by the sidewalk so people in the neighborhood can be inspired.

We salvaged some existing flagstone from the property and were able to use it for the cervice garden. Happy to have all of this great work to do even in the "winter" (it was 70degrees F when we installed this on December 20!)

Another water sucking lawn is gone!! We've been taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather to do some sod removal. Our client wanted to get their landscape ready for planting next Spring, so we removed half of the lawn with a sod cutter, and covered under the tree wirh cardboard and wood mulch to protect the tree roots and smother the remaining grass.

We also built a moss rock outcroping/retaining wall to help catch some erosion from the slope. Looking forward to seeing it come together with plants next year!

Our client hired us to convert their small lawn into a native buffalograss/blue grama grass lawn, and we started the project this fall by removing the turf. We used a sod cutter to manually remove the sod, and then we immediately covered the bare soil with 2" of compost, a layer of leaves, and tucked it all in with re-purposed burlap coffee bags. The leaves and compost will degrade and work its way into the soil over the winter, and we will be ready to plant our grass plugs in the Spring (after removing the burlap)!

Another happy client and successful ecoscape installation! We installed dozens of new Colorado native plants, including shrubs such as rabbitbrush, fernbush, western sandcherry, and lead plant. We used somee blue grama 'blonde ambition' and little bluestem to give the landscape a grassy flare, and a smattering of native wildflowers such as goldenrod, wild blue flax, rocky mountain penstemon, winecups, and blanketflower. We also included some hummingbird plants such as windwalker red salvia, red birds in a tree, and hummingbird trumpet.

The one bummer of planting in the fall is you have to wait until next year to see everything bloom. But patience is a virtue and we can't wait to see how it looks in the future!

Send us a message if you are interested in converting your yard to a beautiful pollinator friendly ecoscape, we'd love to help!

This week we installed this new meditation pathway and pollinator garden around my clients existing aspen trees. Definitely the curviest pathway we've ever installed! My client is going to finish it with flagstone later. And we can't wait to see how all the plants grow in! Some of the highlights are leadplant, switchgrass, blanketflower, rocky mountain columbine, alkali sacaton, and hummingbird trumpet.

This area is part of a larger design for the whole property that we plan to implement in stages. A little snippet of the design is shown at the end.

We are already booking clients for next year, so please reach out if you are interested in starting your own pollinator garden or have any other ecological landscaping needs in the Denver area!

Went back to check in on the progress of this meadow we planted for our client in 2022, and wow is it looking beautiful! Spotted some viceroy butterflies on the Liatris ligulistylis (Rocky Mountain Blazing Star/Gayfeather), of which a few of the flowers are also fasciating. Fasciation is a kind of mutation of elongated growth by the meristematic cells. Also I thought the butterflies were monarchs, but my client educated me about the viceroy butterfly being a visual mimic of the monarch. Nature is so fascinating! This meadow is full of prairie grasses like western wheatgrass, switchgrass, buffalo grass and blue grama, and dozens of types of wildflowers. And best of all...its unirrigated!

Send us a message if you are interested in creating a meadow in your own landscape, we would love to help!
