It’s always meaningful to see a project recognized—and especially nice to see this one in print.

My 1st Place Medium Kitchen from the 2026 NKBA Rocky Mountain Peak Awards is featured in the September/October Kitchens issue of Colorado Homes & Lifestyles.

This Denver high-rise kitchen was part of a much larger renovation, with every decision considered in relation to how the homeowners wanted to live in the entire space. I’m pleased to see it included alongside the other award-winning work from this year's competition.

A newer condo can still have room for improvement.

Once you look closely at how a home will actually be used, opportunities often become clear. In this condo, that meant adding an island for more workspace and storage, creating a more functional entry, replacing open closet storage with enclosed cabinetry, and carving out a dedicated dining area.

None of these changes required a major renovation. Each addressed a specific need and made the home work better as a whole.

Good design isn’t always about changing more. It’s knowing what’s worth changing—and what already works.

A flexible room works best when both of its purposes are considered from the beginning.

In this Denver condo, the room needed to function primarily as a home office, but the owners also wanted a place for their daughter to stay when the whole family was in town.

The solution wasn’t simply adding a Murphy bed. The desk was positioned to face into the room rather than putting its user’s back to the entry. Open and closed storage supports everyday office needs. When the bed is needed, the desk moves into an adjacent alcove. Black-framed mirrored closet doors visually expand the room while giving the space a more finished look.

Every decision supports how the room actually needs to work—whether it’s an ordinary workday or a full house.

Not every color in a palette needs equal attention.

Changing the proportion of colors from room to room allows each space to have its own character while still relating to the rest of the home.

Sometimes blue leads. Sometimes purple. And a color that plays a supporting role elsewhere can become the star.

The goal isn’t to match. It’s to make every room feel like it belongs to the same home.

A whole-home color palette doesn’t mean every room has to match.

In this Denver high-rise, the palette began with wallpaper in the entry. From there, the same colors appear throughout the home—but the balance changes from room to room.

Blue leads in one space. Purple takes over in another. Teal becomes a backdrop elsewhere.

The starting point creates direction. It doesn’t dictate the result.

Sometimes custom doesn't have to mean expensive.

The new furniture layout in this family room created two seating areas, and a standard-size rug wasn't large enough to connect them properly.

A custom-size rug was the obvious solution—but it wasn't the only one.

I found an affordable retail rug with a pattern that gave me another option. Two rugs could be professionally joined without the seam becoming visually distracting. A rug binding company combined them, trimmed the new rug to the dimensions I needed, and finished the edges.

The result was the size and fit the room required without the expense of a fully custom rug.

Knowing where to invest is an important part of design. So is recognizing when a more resourceful solution can accomplish the goal beautifully.

Every recommendation should have a purpose—including how the budget is spent.

Sometimes the best design solutions begin with a simple conversation.

My clients initially asked for help updating their family room to coordinate with a new piece of artwork in the adjoining breakfast nook.

As we talked about the space, I realized the opportunity was much bigger than selecting new furnishings and fabrics.

The fireplace wall wasn't supporting the way they actually lived. The television viewing could be improved, the wall lacked architectural balance, and the structural header over an adjacent niche interrupted the room visually.

Rather than simply updating the room, I proposed redesigning the entire feature wall with a custom built-in. Decorative upper doors were designed to conceal the structural header, allowing the cabinetry to read as one unified architectural feature while adding valuable storage below.

That single design decision became the foundation for the entire transformation. It improved TV viewing, created a comfortable seating area where the couple could enjoy their morning coffee together, and brought the architecture, furnishings, and artwork into one cohesive design.

Clients often come to me with a specific goal. My role is to recognize additional opportunities they may not have considered and create thoughtful solutions that improve how they live every day.

Great design doesn't stop at solving the problem you see. It recognizes the possibilities you don't.

When people think about kitchen design, they usually picture cabinets, countertops, and finishes.

That's actually one of the last parts of my process.

Before selecting materials, I think about how my clients will use the space every day. Where will they prep? Where will they bake? Where will guests gather? How will people move through the room without getting in each other's way?

Only after those questions are answered do the cabinetry, appliances, lighting, and finishes come together.

Beautiful kitchens aren't created by beautiful products alone.

Why two islands?

At first glance, two kitchen islands might seem like a luxury.

For this client, they were a practical solution.

She wanted a kitchen where she could teach cooking classes while also creating a welcoming space for family and friends. Rather than asking one island to do everything, I divided the kitchen into two distinct work zones.

One island became the primary cleanup and gathering space.

The second became a dedicated baking and teaching station.

Even the lighting plan was designed around those work zones because a successful kitchen is about much more than beautiful finishes.

Great kitchens aren't designed around trends.

They're designed around the people who use them.
