π½π§ DIY Guide: How to Change a Toilet Flapper π§π½
Is your toilet running longer than it should? It might be time to change the toilet flapper! Don't worryβthis is a simple and quick fix you can do yourself to save both water and money. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you out:
Tools & Materials Needed:
New toilet flapper
Sponge or towel
Rubber gloves
Adjustable wrench (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Turn Off the Water:
Locate the shut-off valve behind the toilet and turn it clockwise to stop the water flow. Flush the toilet to drain the tank.
Remove the Old Flapper:
Take off the lid of the toilet tank and set it aside carefully. Disconnect the chain from the flush lever. Remove the old flapper from the overflow tube by unhooking it (you may need to wiggle it gently).
Clean the Seal Area:
Use a sponge or towel to clean the area around the flapper seal. Ensure it's free from any debris that could prevent a good seal with the new flapper.
Install the New Flapper:
Attach the new flapper to the overflow tube where the old one was. Hook the ears of the flapper onto the pegs on the sides or clip it to the tube, depending on the design.
Connect the Chain:
Reattach the chain to the flush lever. Adjust the chain length so there's a slight slack (about half an inch) but not too loose to prevent proper sealing.
Turn the Water Back On:
Turn the shut-off valve counterclockwise to restore the water supply. Let the tank fill up, then flush the toilet to test the new flapper's functionality.
Check for Leaks:
Ensure the flapper seals properly after each flush. If you notice any issues, adjust the chain or reposition the flapper as needed.
Tips:
Double-Check Fit: Make sure the new flapper matches the size and shape of the original one for a proper fit.
Regular Maintenance: Consider replacing your toilet flapper every couple of years to maintain optimal performance.
